Repeated land subsidence incidents in Chhatabad in the Katras area of Dhanbad have raised concerns among residents. In the latest incident, around half a dozen houses are reported to have been buried, while about 55 houses are said to be at risk. Local residents said the subsidence has created a housing crisis for around 500 people, with several families removing belongings from their homes and searching for safer places, while some have been forced to stay in the open.
The latest incident is not the first case of land subsidence in Chhatabad. According to the report, similar incidents occurred here on July 7 and August 7. With the ground sinking for the third time, fear among residents has increased. Families whose houses were already weak or affected now face greater risk. Residents said they no longer feel assured about when or where the ground could sink next.
Following the latest subsidence, cracks and signs of sinking have reportedly appeared at several locations in the area. Affected families have started removing essential belongings from their homes. The safety of children, elderly people and women is among the biggest concerns for residents. Amid the continued risk of ground movement, people are reportedly unable to sleep peacefully even at night.
At the local level, around 55 houses have been reported to be affected. Some houses have suffered direct damage, while other buildings are also reportedly under threat. The reported collapse of around half a dozen houses has highlighted the situation in the area. Residents said that if the subsidence continues, more houses could come under its impact in the future.
The impact of the incident is not limited to houses. Affected families are also facing challenges related to shelter, food and keeping their belongings safe. People who built their homes through years of hard work are now being forced to leave them. Some families have reached a situation where they are staying in the open, while others are trying to move to safer locations with relatives or acquaintances.
Temporary accommodation had also been arranged for affected families after earlier incidents in Chhatabad. However, the latest subsidence has raised questions over that arrangement as well. According to the report, the community building where people were temporarily housed after previous incidents has now also been affected by land subsidence. This has made the search for a safe location an even bigger challenge for affected families.
Local residents allege that after the previous incidents, they were assured of a solution and rehabilitation by the administration, BCCL and public representatives. Residents said that timely permanent relocation of affected families and necessary safety measures in vulnerable areas could have helped avoid the current situation. However, the final conclusion regarding the causes of the land subsidence and responsibility will emerge only after an investigation.
Residents of Chhatabad have been demanding rehabilitation for a long time. Affected families said that merely moving people to safe locations after an incident is not enough and that permanent housing and safety arrangements are required. Sending families back to houses considered unsafe could also be risky. Local residents are therefore demanding safe rehabilitation and a scientific survey of the affected area.
Local councillor Mohammad Shahabuddin said that around 500 people have been rendered homeless following the current incident. According to him, after a prolonged movement, BCCL management had assured residents regarding rehabilitation, a survey of the site and filling work in the affected area, but people did not see action at the expected level. The latest incident has once again increased pressure over these demands.
Amid the repeated land subsidence incidents, the administration has also assessed the situation at the site. According to the report, Baghmara Circle Officer Girjanand Kisku reached the affected area and said that affected people would be shifted to a safe location. He also said that a meeting would be held with BCCL management to take steps towards resolving the problem.
The developments of the past few months provide a record of earlier incidents in Chhatabad. Houses were affected after a land subsidence incident in July. In August, another ground-sinking incident reportedly affected around a dozen houses. At the end of August, a large sinkhole reportedly formed near Kajubagan pond after the ground subsided, and water from the pond seeped into the ground. The incident further increased residents' concerns about the stability of the land in the area.
Similar incidents have continued to be reported in Katras and surrounding coalfield areas of Dhanbad. In separate incidents, houses have been damaged, people have been injured and, in some cases, fatalities have also been reported. This has kept rehabilitation and safety as continuing concerns for families living in land-subsidence-affected areas.
For residents of Chhatabad, the immediate question is where they should go with their families and belongings. Returning to houses where walls have developed cracks or where the ground around the buildings is sinking remains a concern for residents. The administration therefore faces the challenge of providing immediate safe locations as well as arranging long-term rehabilitation for affected families.
The repeated incidents indicate that a one-time relief arrangement will not resolve the situation in Chhatabad. Until a detailed survey of the affected area, identification of at-risk houses, assessment of ground stability and a concrete arrangement for safe rehabilitation are carried out, concerns among local residents may continue. Affected families are now awaiting the next steps by the administration and BCCL and are seeking a permanent arrangement for safe housing.
