In Indian culture, the guru holds a position that has the power to transform both the direction and the condition of life. A guru is not merely a medium of education, but a lamp that awakens the soul. Every year, the auspicious festival of Guru Purnima is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Ashadha, which is an excellent opportunity to express reverence, gratitude, and devotion towards the guru. In the year 2025, this festival will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 10th, and this Guru Purnima is considered even more special because of the formation of an extraordinary combination of Indra Yoga, Bhadra Vaas, Purva Ashadha Nakshatra, and Bava Karana on this day. Such divine conjunctions occur after many years and signify numerous positive changes in spiritual and worldly life.

Historical Significance of Guru Purnima

Guru Purnima is also known as Vyasa Purnima. This day is also celebrated as the birth anniversary of Maharishi Ved Vyasa, who compiled the Vedas, divided them into four parts, and created a treasure trove of invaluable knowledge for human civilization by composing the epic Mahabharata. This is why he is considered the first guru. In the Sanatan tradition, the guru is equated with the Tridevas – Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, as they are the factors of creation (knowledge), sustenance (guidance), and destruction (destruction of ignorance).

If you have a guru in your life, purify their feet or photograph with Gangajal (holy water) and offer sandalwood paste, flowers, and Akshata (unbroken rice grains). This brings purity to both your mind and soul and increases knowledge. This day is considered the most auspicious for studying.

6. Dakshina (Donation) to the Guru

The relationship between a guru and a disciple is not merely worldly; it is a bond of a spiritual journey. The guru leads the disciple from ignorance to knowledge, from darkness to light, and from death to immortality.

'Guru Bina Gati Nahi, Guru Bina Gyan Nahi.' (Without a Guru, there is no progress, without a Guru, there is no knowledge.)

Kabirdas also says –

'Guru Gobind Dou Khade, Kake Lagoon Pay.
Balihaari Guru Aapne, Gobind Diyo Batay!!'

The Guru is the medium of experiencing Govind. Therefore, on this day, one should not just bow to the guru, but should also offer self-surrender.
