India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for large parts of the country for June 16, forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning across 19 states. According to the forecast, weather conditions are expected to change significantly in several regions, with wind speeds likely to reach 80–90 kmph in some areas.
The IMD has advised people to remain alert and has urged farmers and those working outdoors to take additional precautions.
According to the IMD, the states under the heavy rain and thunderstorm alert are Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Rainfall accompanied by b winds and lightning is expected in different parts of these states.
The weather department said wind speeds could reach 80–90 kmph in some areas. Such conditions may lead to fallen trees, disruptions to electricity supply and damage to weak structures. A lightning warning has also been issued for parts of eastern and central India.
In Delhi, rain accompanied by thunderstorms is forecast on June 16. Wind speeds may reach 65–70 kmph, while the maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be 37°C and 29°C respectively.
Heavy rain and b winds have been forecast for Lucknow, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Kanpur, Agra and other districts of Uttar Pradesh. Wind speeds in some areas may reach 80–85 kmph.
In Bihar, warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms have been issued for Patna, Gaya, Darbhanga, Bhagalpur, Purnia and other districts. People have been advised to avoid open areas.
Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir are expected to receive heavy rainfall, with hailstorms possible at some locations. Wind speeds of 60–70 kmph may occur in these states, increasing the risk of landslides and road blockages.
Jharkhand and West Bengal are under warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms, with wind speeds likely to reach 70–75 kmph.
Punjab and Haryana may experience heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning. Crop damage is possible in some areas.
Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are under alert for dust storms and rainfall. Wind speeds are expected to range between 50 and 75 kmph.
In the northeastern states, including Assam and Meghalaya and adjoining areas, heavy rain and storms are forecast, with winds reaching 70–75 kmph.
According to the IMD, a cyclonic circulation is active at lower atmospheric levels over northern Haryana and adjoining eastern Uttar Pradesh. The system is causing unstable weather conditions across northern and eastern India.
