India, Nepal Army Chiefs Discuss Enhanced Defence Cooperation at UNTCC Conference

Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi met with Lieutenant General Pradeep Jung, ACOAS (Assistant Chief of Army Staff) of the Nepali Army, during the United Nations Military Contributing Countries Chiefs of Conference (UNTCC 2025) held in New Delhi. 

New Delhi: Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi met Lieutenant General Pradeep Jung, ACOAS of the Nepali Army, during the United Nations Military Contributing Countries Chiefs of Conference (UNTCC) held in New Delhi. On this occasion, both leaders discussed several broad issues, including joint training, and deliberated on strengthening the enduring partnership between the armies of the two neighboring countries. 

Earlier on Tuesday, General Upendra Dwivedi had stated that hosting this conference in India is not only a privilege but also instrumental in further strengthening the mission of global peace.

In-depth Discussions on India-Nepal Defence Cooperation

The Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI) of the Indian Army, in information shared on X, stated that during the meeting, both military chiefs committed to promoting joint training initiatives, regularizing defence dialogues, and enhancing cooperation in UN peacekeeping operations. Both leaders affirmed that the relationship between the armies of India and Nepal is based on “mutual respect, trust, and shared values,” which foster regional stability and peace.

General Dwivedi and Lieutenant General Jung also acknowledged that cross-border cooperation and exchange of training are extremely crucial in the modern global security environment. The armies of both countries have maintained a b military partnership for decades due to their shared history, geographical proximity, and cultural ties.

Successful Hosting of UNTCC Conference

The UNTCC Chiefs of Conference, held in New Delhi from October 14 to 16, 2025, saw the participation of senior military officials from over 30 countries. Hosted by India, this conference discussed global security challenges, new standards for peacekeeping operations, and modern methods of cooperation. Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, in his address, stated, “Hosting this conference in India is not only an honour but also a major step towards strengthening the global peace mission.” He explained that the objective of this conference is to foster cooperation, exchange resources, and develop new strategies among nations during peacekeeping operations.

India and Nepal have traditionally maintained close cooperation in the defence and security sectors. The armies of both countries regularly participate in joint exercises, disaster relief operations, and training programs with each other. India's Ministry of External Affairs had previously stated that “India-Nepal defence relations are based on mutual trust, respect, and shared security interests.”

This meeting not only adds a new dimension to the dialogue between the two armies but also makes a significant contribution towards lasting peace and stability in the Himalayan region.

Peace Essential for Development: Rajnath Singh

During the conference, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also addressed the nations, stating that “India is committed to upholding the rule-based international order.” He said that while some countries violate international rules, India is dedicated to the UN Charter and the spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the world is one family). The Defence Minister clearly stated that “peace is essential for development, prosperity, and sustainable progress.”

General Upendra Dwivedi informed that India is one of the largest troop-contributing countries to UN peacekeeping operations. So far, India has participated in 51 out of a total of 71 missions and has deployed approximately 300,000 soldiers, including women, for global peace.
