Heightened Alert on India-Nepal Border Following Bangladeshi Infiltration and Escaped Prisoners

Alert is on. Illegal infiltration by Bangladeshi citizens has been caught. Security agencies are increasing vigil and have appealed to locals for cooperation.

New Delhi: The India-Nepal border is an open border where people and commercial activities move daily. However, the situation has changed recently. Following the Gen-Z protests in Nepal, security agencies have heightened their vigilance along this border. Intelligence agencies suspect that Pakistan might use this route for infiltration into India. The recent arrest of several Bangladeshi citizens has deepened these apprehensions.

Why the Alert Has Increased

The 137-kilometer-long border connected to the East Champaran district is considered the most crucial between India and Nepal. This route connects Delhi and Kathmandu and passes through areas like Raxaul, Adapur, and Chhauradano. According to intelligence agencies, dozens of villages in the Parsa, Bara, and Rautahat districts of Nepal are highly sensitive from a security perspective.

The threat has escalated further following the ongoing protests in Nepal and the escape of a large number of prisoners from its jails. Reports indicate that over 15,000 suspected individuals have escaped from Nepalese jails, including around 50 Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationals. All of them might attempt to infiltrate India using forged documents.

Recent Arrests and Unmasking of a Network

Some recently apprehended Bangladeshi citizens revealed during interrogation that they were attempting to enter India via Nepal. An investigation into their activities has raised suspicions of a large international network being active. This network is also reportedly involved in human trafficking, the creation of fake documents, and illegal financial transactions.

Increased Surveillance on Smuggling

The India-Nepal border has long been a hub for smuggling and human trafficking. Due to activities involving weapons, drugs, and counterfeit currency, security agencies have been on high alert here on several occasions before. In light of the current situation, security forces have intensified surveillance.

However, the impact of this intensified investigation and vigilance is also visible on small-scale trade and daily wage laborers at the border. Small traders and laborers crossing the India-Nepal border daily are now undergoing stringent checks. The administration states that this inconvenience is temporary but a necessary step for national security.

Security Arrangements at the Local Level

Patrolling has been intensified in areas like Raxaul, Birgunj, Adapur, and Harpur. Close watch is being maintained on rural roads, bridges, and pathways. Personnel from the 71st and 47th Battalions of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) are conducting continuous checks.

Sanjay Pandey, Commandant of the 47th Battalion headquarters located at Pantoka, stated that the border is highly sensitive. Continuous directives are being received from higher authorities, and security arrangements are being strengthened in coordination with local police stations and BOP (Border Outpost) officials.

Suspects Escaped from Nepal Jail

The escape of prisoners from Nepalese jails has further complicated the situation. According to reports, thousands of inmates have fled from prisons, many of whom were involved in serious crimes. Approximately 50 foreign nationals are also said to be among them. Their presence could pose a security challenge for India.
