India Finalizes 24 Parliamentary Standing Committees: Key Appointments & Political Balance Retained

The Government of India has finalized the formation of 24 Standing Committees of Parliament. No major changes have been made in the appointment of the chairpersons and members of these committees, and several existing chairpersons will continue in their roles. 

New Delhi: The government has given final approval for the formation of 24 Standing Committees in Parliament. The distribution of members in these committees is as follows: the Bharatiya Janata Party has been assigned 11, Congress 4, TMC and DMK two each, while the Samajwadi Party, JDU, NCP (Ajit Pawar faction), TDP, and Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) have each been entrusted with one committee. Furthermore, all chairpersons of the parliamentary committees have been retained, and no changes have been made.

Key Appointments and Political Balance

According to the new appointments, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been assigned the chairmanship of 11 committees, while Congress will lead 4 committees. TMC and DMK have been given responsibility for two committees each. Additionally, the Samajwadi Party, JDU, NCP (Ajit Pawar faction), TDP, and Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) will each lead one committee.

These appointments ensure political balance while retaining the role of experienced MPs. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor will continue as the chairperson of the Standing Committee on External Affairs, while Digvijaya Singh has been appointed chairperson of the committee related to Women, Child Development, Education, and Youth Affairs.

Other Important Appointments

  • Rajiv Pratap Rudy has been entrusted with the committee related to the Ministry of Water Resources.
  • Radha Mohan Agarwal (BJP) has been made the chairperson of the Home Affairs Committee.
  • Dola Sen (TMC) has been given leadership of committees related to Commerce.
  • T. Siva (DMK) has become the chairperson of the Industry Committee.
  • Sanjay Kumar Jha (JDU) has been appointed chairperson of the Transport Committee.
  • Ramgopal Yadav (SP) has been given charge of the Health and Family Welfare Committee.

Bhartruhari Mahtab, Kirti Azad, C.M. Ramesh, and Anurag Singh Thakur have been given leadership of committees related to Finance, Chemicals & Fertilizers, Railways, and Coal, Mines & Steel, respectively. Baijayant Panda has been appointed as the chairperson of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code Select Committee. Tejasvi Surya has been appointed as the chairperson of the Jan Vishwas Bill Select Committee.

Parliamentary Standing Committees are permanent bodies comprised of members from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, which conduct in-depth scrutiny of proposed laws, review budget allocations, and analyze government policies. Through these committees, ministries and departments are held accountable.
