India to Observe 77th Republic Day on 26 January 2026 with Kartavya Path Parade

India will mark its 77th Republic Day on 26 January 2026, commemorating the enforcement of the Constitution. A ceremonial parade will be held on Kartavya Path in New Delhi, showcasing the country’s military capabilities, cultural diversity, and democratic values.

The main event will take place on Kartavya Path, where the President will hoist the national flag and lead the Republic Day parade. Observances will be held nationwide, with flag-hoisting ceremonies and cultural programmes organised at schools, government institutions, and public places. The day marks the adoption of the Constitution on 26 January 1950, which established India as a sovereign, democratic, and constitutional republic.

Historical significance of 26 January

The date of 26 January carries historical importance linked to 1930, when the Indian National Congress, at its Lahore session, declared ‘Purna Swaraj’ and resolved to establish India as a fully independent nation. When the date for enforcing the Constitution was decided, 26 January was chosen to honour the spirit of the independence movement.

The Constitution was drafted over nearly three years by the Drafting Committee chaired by Dr B R Ambedkar. It came into force on 26 January 1950, replacing the Government of India Act, 1935. With its implementation, citizens were granted fundamental rights including equality, liberty, justice, and fraternity.

Parade and main ceremonies

The Republic Day Parade is counted among the world’s largest military parades. It features contingents from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, displays of modern weapon systems and missiles, a flypast by fighter aircraft, and tableaux presented by states and Union Territories. The tableaux depict India’s cultural diversity and development initiatives.

During the parade, the President confers gallantry awards and civilian honours. The Republic Day celebrations conclude formally with the ‘Beating the Retreat’ ceremony on 29 January, during which military bands perform patriotic compositions.

Republic Day facts

India’s first Republic Day was celebrated on 26 January 1950, when Dr Rajendra Prasad assumed office as the country’s first President. In the initial years, the parade was held at venues including Irwin Stadium and the Red Fort, before Rajpath, now known as Kartavya Path, became the permanent venue.

The first Chief Guest at a Republic Day celebration was the President of Indonesia, Sukarno. Each year, the Padma Awards are also announced on the occasion, recognising citizens for their contributions to the nation.
