In Sanatan Dharma, the month of Kartik is considered the most sacred, and the पूर्णिमा (full moon) tithi (date) of this month holds special significance. This day is also known as Tripurari Purnima and Dev Deepavali. According to religious beliefs, it was on this day that Lord Shiva annihilated the demon Tripurasura, which is why this day is also known as the festival of victory and light.

In 2025, Kartik Purnima will be celebrated on November 5th. This day is a special festival not only in Hinduism but also in Sikhism. For the Sikh community, this day is extremely important as the Prakash Purv (birth anniversary) of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Why Ganga Snan is performed on Kartik Purnima

It is believed that taking a bath in the Ganges on Kartik Purnima washes away all sins and brings the fruits of a pilgrimage. Devotees who cannot go to pilgrimage sites like Prayagraj, Varanasi, or Haridwar can take a bath at home by mixing Gangajal (holy water from the Ganges) in their bath water.

Significance of Dev Deepavali

Dev Deepavali is also celebrated on the day of Kartik Purnima. It is believed that on this day, all the gods and goddesses descend from heaven to earth and celebrate by lighting lamps on the ghats of the Ganges. Especially in the city of Kashi (Varanasi), the ghats are decorated with thousands of lamps on this day, and a grand Ganga Aarti is performed.

How to observe the fast and perform puja on Kartik Purnima

  • Lighting a lamp in front of the Tulsi plant is also considered auspicious.
  • Wake up early on the day of Kartik Purnima, take a bath, and make a vow to fast.
  • Tamasic foods such as spicy food, onions-garlic, tea-coffee, tobacco, etc., are prohibited during the fast.
  • Begin the puja with the worship of Lord Ganesha.
  • Perform the puja of Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati with the Shodashopachar method.
  • Worship Vishnu and Lakshmi Ji and recite the Satyanarayan Katha.
  • Offer Arghya (oblations) to the moon and offer lamps in a lake, pond, or river in the evening.
  • Donate food, clothes, sesame seeds, rice, etc., to a Brahmin or the needy.

Many religious stories are prevalent about Kartik Purnima. It is said that Lord Vishnu took the Matsya (fish) avatar on this day. According to the Shiv Purana, the demon Tripurasura had created terror in all three worlds, then Lord Shiva annihilated him, and this day came to be known as Tripurari Purnima.

Significance of sacred Yajna and Havan

Performing Yajna, Havan, observing fasts, and chanting mantras on this day brings special benefits. Religious belief holds that Lord Vishnu resides on Earth in a special way on this day. Therefore, puja, charity, and Deepdaan are considered particularly significant. Many people also perform Gita Path, Vishnu Sahasranama, and Hari Kirtan on this day.

A grand Dev Deepavali is held in Kashi

The Dev Deepavali on the banks of the Ganges in Varanasi is famous worldwide. Thousands of devotees reach Kashi and light lamps on the ghats of the Ganges, seeking the blessings of Lord Shiva and Ganga Maiya. Ganga Aarti, darshan from boats, and the decoration of the ghats provide the devotees with an experience of spiritual energy.
