Mahua Moitra condemned the controversial statements of TMC leaders in the Kolkata gang-rape case. She stated that misogyny exists in every party, but the TMC does not accept the wrongdoings of its leaders.
Kolkata Law College Gangrape Case: The gang-rape of a student at the South Calcutta Law College has shaken the entire West Bengal. On this sensitive issue, while the main opposition party in the state, the BJP, is continuously attacking the government, statements by some leaders of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) have created further controversy.
Controversy arising from the statements of Kalyan Banerjee and Madan Mitra
TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee made a controversial statement, saying that women should decide which company they are going out with. Meanwhile, MLA Madan Mitra said that if the victim had not gone to college alone, this incident would not have happened. A widespread protest started regarding these statements. Many people called them victim-blaming and questioned whether people with such thinking were fit to remain public representatives.
TMC distanced itself from its leaders
The TMC, taking immediate action, described the statements of these two leaders as their "personal opinions." The party clarified that it does not agree with these views and does not support such thinking. A statement issued by the party said that the crime against the female student was heinous and the party is committed to bringing the perpetrators involved to severe punishment. The TMC also stated that crime against women will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Mahua Moitra's b stance
TMC MP Mahua Moitra, while justifying her party's position, made an important statement. Sharing the official response of the TMC on the social media platform X, she wrote, "Misogyny in India transcends party lines. But the hallmark of TMC is that we don't shy away from condemning even the absurd and hateful comments of our leaders."
Mahua Moitra indirectly targeted the BJP as well
In her statement, Mahua Moitra also indicated that crimes against women should not be used as a political weapon. She said that those who hate women are not only in one party but exist in every party. The only difference is which party accepts this hatred and which opposes it.
BJP held the TMC government responsible
The BJP has called this incident a failure of the state government. The party says that the security situation of women is very poor in the state where there is a woman Chief Minister. Senior BJP leaders, holding a dharna in Kolkata, said that this is a state-sponsored conspiracy and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee should respond to it.
