President Emmanuel Macron is visiting Cyprus amid heightened tensions in the eastern Mediterranean following recent Iranian drone and missile attacks on the island. France has increased security measures and military deployment in response to the developments.
Macron is scheduled to arrive in Cyprus on Monday, where he will meet Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The meetings will focus on strengthening the strategic partnership between France and Cyprus, maritime security, and ensuring freedom of movement for commercial shipping. The visit is positioned within broader efforts to maintain security and stability in the eastern Mediterranean.
Following the Iranian drone attacks, France has expanded its military presence in the Mediterranean. President Macron ordered the deployment of France’s largest aircraft carrier, Charles de Gaulle, to the region. Additional warships and air defence units have also been sent to support Cyprus’s security. The deployment is aimed at reinforcing France’s military presence in the eastern Mediterranean and addressing potential threats.

Another objective of Macron’s visit is the protection of key maritime routes. During discussions, Macron is expected to emphasise security along important shipping corridors including the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz. The European Union is already conducting monitoring and security operations in these areas under the “Aspides Maritime Operation”.
France has described the Iranian drone attacks on Cyprus as a threat to Europe as a whole. Macron’s visit is intended to signal France’s commitment to the security of its partners. The three leaders are expected to discuss enhanced security measures and future challenges during the meetings.
France and Cyprus maintain a longstanding strategic partnership. The cooperation covers maritime security, commercial navigation, and regional stability. Macron’s visit is expected to include discussions on security coordination, protection of maritime routes, and bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
