New Delhi: Maruti Suzuki is once again poised to create a stir in the Indian automobile market. This time, the company is bringing a new mid-size SUV, currently known as 'Maruti Escudo'. According to media reports, this SUV is scheduled to launch in India on September 3, 2025. Although the final name will be revealed on the launch day, there is already considerable excitement among customers regarding this vehicle.
With the Escudo, Maruti is set to launch India's first SUV with an underbody CNG tank, ensuring no compromise on boot space. This innovation is considered a major step in CNG technology.
Improved CNG Utilization with New Technology
The Maruti Escudo will be the company's first car to feature a CNG tank mounted under the vehicle, instead of the traditional boot space. This new technology will not only make the entire boot space usable but will also maintain excellent balance in the car's handling, suspension, and performance.
This CNG setup will be factory-fitted by the company, ensuring better coordination with the engine, braking, and transmission systems. It is expected that Maruti may incorporate similar technology in its other CNG vehicles in the future.
Safety and Smart Technology
The Maruti Escudo will be the brand's first SUV to be equipped with Level-2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). This technology will not only make driving safer but also provide users with a modern driving experience with smart features.
Additionally, this SUV will also feature a Dolby Atmos audio system, making it the first Maruti car in India to offer this sound technology. This will completely transform the music experience in the car, making it immersive.
Impressive Design and Abundance of Features
The Escudo is likely to feature a powered tailgate, all-wheel drive (AWD) system, smart connectivity features, and an updated infotainment system. The car's design will be muscular and futuristic, capable of attracting both young people and family customers.
Features such as air vents, a panoramic sunroof, a digital driver display, and wireless charging may also be included, potentially making it the most premium CNG SUV in its segment.
Engine Options and Powertrain
Although the company has not officially announced the engine details of the Escudo, there is speculation in the auto industry that this SUV is expected to feature a 1.5-liter K15C petrol mild-hybrid engine (103 bhp) and a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol-hybrid engine (115 bhp).
These engines are already available in the current Grand Vitara and are known for providing economical mileage. The Escudo is likely to offer them with a CNG option. Both manual and automatic transmission options may be offered.
Market Buzz Regarding Pricing and Competition
The Maruti Escudo will be positioned between the Brezza and the Grand Vitara. Due to the narrow price gap between these two existing models, the initial price of the Escudo is estimated to be between ₹9.5 lakh and ₹13.5 lakh (ex-showroom).
After its launch, the Escudo will directly compete with some b players already present in the Indian market, including:
- Hyundai Creta
- Toyota Hyryder
- Kia Seltos
- Volkswagen Taigun
- Skoda Kushaq
- Honda Elevate
The Escudo's biggest strengths will be its factory-fitted underbody CNG technology, Level-2 ADAS, and AWD system, which will set it apart from the rest of the competitors.
Customer Enthusiasm for the Launch
Inquiries about this new model have already started at Maruti Suzuki dealerships. Some dealers have unofficially started pre-bookings as well. There is particular excitement among customers regarding the Escudo because it is considered Maruti's most advanced SUV to date.
