Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal in the 48 kg category at the National Weightlifting Championship 2026, held in Modinagar, Uttar Pradesh, setting three national records during the competition.
Competing in the 48 kg category, Mirabai lifted 89 kg in the snatch event to register a new national record. She then lifted 116 kg in the clean and jerk, setting another national record. Her combined total of 205 kg established a third national record in the total category. As a result, she set new national records in the snatch, clean and jerk, and total events.
Mirabai’s total lift of 205 kg surpassed her previous international total of 199 kg recorded at the 2025 World Championship. During the competition, her attempt to lift 91 kg in the snatch was unsuccessful.
After the event, Mirabai said, “Performing like this in the 48 kg category is very special for me. Earlier, I competed in the 49 kg category, but adapting to the new category was not easy. Despite that, setting records reflects my confidence.” She added that her next goal is to lift more than 90 kg in the snatch and that she will continue her preparations accordingly.
