PM Modi's China Visit for SCO Summit: A Sign of Unity Amidst Global Tensions

China has responded positively to the potential visit of PM Modi for the SCO summit in China. Describing it as a symbol of unity and friendship, China has termed the event as historic.

Modi China Visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Tianjin, China, later this month for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. This visit is significant in several ways, as it will be Modi's first trip to China since 2019. China has warmly welcomed this visit, describing it as an opportunity to strengthen regional friendship and cooperation.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun has expressed a positive response to Prime Minister Modi's proposed visit. He stated that the summit will be a convergence of unity, friendship, and meaningful outcomes. According to Guo, this summit is considered the largest in the history of the SCO to date. It will be attended by leaders from more than 20 countries, including leaders of SCO member states, as well as heads of 10 international organizations.

Modi to Reach Tianjin After Stop in Japan

Before his visit to China, Prime Minister Modi will stop in Japan. On August 30th, he will participate in the annual India-Japan summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Following this, he will depart for Tianjin, where he will participate in the SCO summit, which will take place from August 31st to September 1st.

Important Visit in the Context of India-China Relations

Prime Minister Modi's visit is taking place at a time when several geopolitical tensions are emerging on the global stage. In recent months, India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar have already participated in important SCO-related meetings in China. Modi's visit is being seen as a continuation of these meetings.

Shadow of Tension Between Russia and the United States

This summit is taking place at a time when tensions between the United States and Russia have escalated. US President Donald Trump has criticized BRICS countries for buying oil from Russia. Since many member countries of BRICS and SCO are the same, this summit could set a new direction. Russia will send its representatives to the conference, although it is not yet clear whether President Vladimir Putin will attend in person.

India's Objection to SCO Defense Document

In June 2025, India refused to sign a document presented at the SCO Defence Ministers' meeting. The reason was that the document did not mention the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 people were killed. In contrast, the document mentioned the unrest in Pakistan's Balochistan province. India protested this biased approach.

However, in July, China bly condemned the Pahalgam terrorist attack and spoke of further strengthening regional counter-terrorism cooperation. This reaction is being seen as a positive signal for India.
