When we talk about Indian breakfast, Poha is one such dish that is prepared differently in every region. Although traditionally considered a popular dish of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, it also has a special and spicy presentation in North India. This recipe is full of flavor, nutrition, and freshness and is an ideal option for a busy morning.
Ingredients Required: (For 2 people)
- Thick Poha – 100 grams (1 cup)
- Tomato – 1 (finely chopped)
- Onion – 1 (finely chopped)
- Peas – 1/2 cup (boiled)
- Peanuts – 1/2 cup (roasted)
- Mustard seeds – 1 teaspoon
- Curry leaves – 5-6 leaves
- Green chilies – 2 (finely chopped)
- Ginger-garlic paste – 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric – 1/2 teaspoon
- Red chili powder – 1/2 teaspoon
- Sugar – 1 small teaspoon
- Lemon – 1 (for juice)
- Salt – to taste
- Refined or mustard oil – 2 teaspoons
- Green coriander – for decoration
Method of Preparation
1. Prepare the Poha
First, sift the poha and wash it 2-3 times with cold water and keep it in a sieve for 5 minutes so that the excess water drains out. Keep in mind that the poha should become soft but not break.
2. Heat the Oil
Heat 2 teaspoons of oil in a pan or deep pot. When the oil is hot, add mustard seeds. When the seeds start crackling, add curry leaves and finely chopped green chilies.
3. Add Onion and Ginger-Garlic Paste
Now add finely chopped onion and fry until golden brown. Then add ginger-garlic paste and fry for a minute so that the raw smell goes away.
4. Add Tomatoes and Spices
Now add chopped tomatoes. Along with this, add turmeric, red chili powder, salt and sugar. Let the tomatoes cook well until they start releasing oil.
5. Add Peas and Peanuts
Now add boiled peas and roasted peanuts and cook on medium heat for 2 minutes. The crunch of peanuts and the sweetness of peas add a unique flavor to the poha.
6. Add Poha and Mix
Now add the previously prepared poha and mix well with all the spices. Keep the heat low so that the poha does not break. Cover and cook for 2 minutes so that all the flavors mix well.
7. Lemon Juice and Decoration
Before turning off the gas, squeeze the juice of one lemon from above and mix well. Then add finely chopped green coriander from above.
Serving method
You can serve this spicy North Indian Poha hot with morning tea. If you want, you can further enhance its taste by adding Bhujia or Sev along with it. Some people also like to eat it with curd.
Tips and suggestions:
- Do not cook poha immediately after washing, keeping it in a sieve for 5 minutes improves its texture.
- If you like it spicy, you can increase the amount of green chilies or add more red chili powder.
- Never add water to poha, otherwise it will become sticky.
