Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Tarique Rahman following his party’s victory in the 2026 parliamentary elections in Bangladesh.
In a message posted on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi said the victory reflected the trust of the people of Bangladesh in Rahman’s leadership. He stated that India will always stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh.
Modi said India and Bangladesh share multiple ties and that efforts will be made to strengthen them. He added that both countries will work together to advance shared development goals.
Following the parliamentary elections, counting is continuing, but the Bangladesh Nationalist Party has already secured a majority. The party has won 212 seats, while Jamaat has secured 70 seats.
With this result, Tarique Rahman is expected to become Prime Minister. Rahman has returned to Bangladesh after 17 years.
Modi’s congratulatory message indicated continued cooperation to strengthen the strategic and friendly relations between the two countries. He reiterated that India will remain supportive of a democratic and progressive Bangladesh.
Shared development goals between India and Bangladesh include cooperation in trade, energy, climate, education and defence. Modi stated that collaboration would continue to further strengthen the multidimensional relationship between the two countries.
India is closely observing political developments and forthcoming policies in Bangladesh following the election outcome. The result comes after a prolonged period in which the Awami League was in government and Sheikh Hasina took refuge in India.
Prime Minister Modi’s message also stated that India will work with Bangladesh’s new leadership to promote regional stability and development.
