Tesla Model Y: Tesla has launched a new and more affordable version of its popular SUV, the Model Y, called the Model Y Standard, priced at $41,630 (approximately ₹34.7 lakh). This is $5,000 cheaper compared to the older base variant. The new SUV has removed the panoramic roof and some comfort features, but it still offers 300 hp of power and a range of 517 km. This step has been taken to expand Tesla's reach and challenge electric car companies like BYD.

Design Changes

The new Model Y Standard appears similar in design to its predecessor, but some changes distinguish it. It now features a solid metal roof instead of a panoramic glass roof, providing better insulation and protection against cold or heat in the cabin. Additionally, leather seats have been replaced with fabric seats, and the front light bar has been updated from a simple traditional lighting setup. The SUV's clean and aerodynamic look still retains the Tesla aesthetic. Its minimalist design, flush door handles, and tight body panels keep it modern and stylish, but it now feels a bit more understated and focused.

Cabin and Features

In the new Model Y Standard's cabin, a large 15.4-inch touchscreen controls almost all functions. However, some comfort features have been removed. The steering is now manually adjustable, front seats lack ventilation, and the heating feature for the rear seats has been removed. The 8-inch screen previously available for the rear seat has also been removed. Despite these changes, Tesla's identity in technology and driving experience remains intact.

Performance and Range

In terms of performance, there haven't been significant cuts to the Model Y Standard. It is equipped with a single rear-mounted electric motor and a 69.5 kWh battery, delivering 300 hp of power. Tesla claims this SUV offers a range of 517 kilometers on a single charge and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds. In comparison, the Model Y Long Range version, available in India via import, provides a range of approximately 574 kilometers and achieves 0-100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds. However, its price is considerably higher.

New and More Affordable Model in the Global Market

The Model Y is Tesla's best-selling SUV, leading its rivals in the US, China, and other international markets. In India, two variants of the Model Y are available. The RWD version's on-road price in Delhi is approximately ₹63.11 lakh, and the Long Range RWD model can go up to ₹71.71 lakh. This new, more affordable model has currently been launched in the global market. Upon its launch in the Indian market, it could pose b competition to BYD and other electric SUVs.

This strategy by Tesla indicates a move towards making electric cars more accessible to customers. The company has not compromised on its technology and performance despite reducing the price. Through this, Tesla is not only strengthening its luxury segment but is also striving to bring electric vehicles to a broader market.
