Daman-Diu MP Umesh Patel demanded a cut in the salary and allowances of MPs in the Lok Sabha due to the inactivity of the House. He suggested saving public money by protesting with a banner in the Parliament complex.
New Delhi. Independent MP from Daman and Diu, Umesh Patel, protested in the Parliament House complex, claiming that if the proceedings of the House do not take place, the salaries and allowances of MPs should be withheld. He said that when bills are passed without adequate discussion and there is more uproar in the House, it is a waste of public money.
Less Time Spent on Discussion in Lok Sabha
A total of 120 hours of discussion were scheduled for this session for the Lok Sabha, but only 37 hours of discussion could take place. Most of this time was spent in uproar over Operation Sindoor and other bills. Most of the bills were passed without adequate review and debate. Considering this situation, Umesh Patel raised the demand for responsibility of MPs and salary cuts.
Umesh Patel's Protest
MP Umesh Patel protested in the Parliament complex with a banner. The banner read, "Apologize, Ruling Party and Opposition Apologize." He said that if the House does not function, the cost should be recovered from the pockets of the MPs. He said that there is no need to spend public money unnecessarily like this.
What Umesh Patel Said
Umesh Patel clarified that MPs should get salary only when there is work in the House. He said, "If there is no discussion in the House and bills are passed without review, then why should the public pay for its expenses? It should be deducted from the salary and allowances of the MPs."
Similar Demand Was Raised Earlier Also
About two weeks ago also, Umesh Patel had made a similar demand. He had said that MPs should not get allowances if the House does not function. He alleged that the proceedings of the House are being disrupted due to the ego of both the ruling party and the opposition. He said that when public works are not being done, then why should the allowance of MPs continue?
Concern About the Functioning of Parliament
Most of the time in Parliament is spent in uproar, disputes and rhetoric. This not only slows down the law-making process, but also the expectations of the public are not fulfilled. Umesh Patel says that in such a situation, cutting the salary and allowances of MPs can be a way to restore public trust.
The salary and allowances of MPs are fixed according to the rules of Parliament. Umesh Patel said that by making changes in the rules, it can be ensured that the salary of MPs is cut during the period of inactivity of the House. This will increase the sense of responsibility among the MPs and the proceedings in the House will be completed on time.
