Sri Lanka A secured victory in the Super Over, while India A suffered a narrow defeat. Following the conclusion of the match, tension was visible among players amid the highly competitive nature of the contest and the pressure of the final moments.
After the match, a heated argument broke out between India’s Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Sri Lanka’s Vishen Halambage. Within moments, the exchange escalated into physical contact, with both players involved in a brief shoving incident. As the situation developed, experienced Sri Lanka A wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella intervened and separated the two players. A video of the incident has been widely shared on social media, prompting discussion among cricket followers and experts.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has established a detailed Code of Conduct to regulate player behaviour. Under Article 2.12 of the code, inappropriate physical contact with a player, umpire, match official, support staff member or any other person is considered a breach of regulations.
Under the rule, deliberately pushing, shoulder-barging, colliding with, or engaging in any physical behaviour deemed contrary to the spirit of the game may lead to disciplinary action. However, before determining any sanction, the match referee assesses the seriousness of the incident, the players’ intent and the surrounding circumstances.
If the match referee determines that a player has breached the ICC Code of Conduct, several forms of disciplinary action may be considered. These can include an official warning, a fine on match fees, demerit points or, in more serious cases, suspension.
However, a full investigation is conducted before any player is found guilty. Video footage, reports from match officials and statements from the players involved may also form part of the decision-making process. As a result, it remains premature to conclude whether Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could face a severe penalty or whether the matter may be resolved with a warning.
