Yunus Government's Reaction
Shafiqul Alam, the press secretary to Mohammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the current interim government of Bangladesh, has welcomed the WHO's decision. He described it as a decisive step towards accountability. In a Facebook post, Shafiqul stated that this decision strengthens transparency, integrity, and justice, and the people of Bangladesh are pleased with it.
According to him, "We believe this is a temporary solution. The permanent solution would be to remove Saima Wazed from her position, revoke all privileges, and restore the credibility of the WHO."
When and how was Saima appointed?
Saima Wazed was appointed as the WHO's Regional Director for South-East Asia in January 2024. This position is considered a highly influential role within UN-related organizations.
