The water level of the Yamuna River in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, has risen above the danger mark. The continuously rising waters have submerged colonies and villages, affecting thousands of people, and the administration is engaged in relief efforts.
Mathura: In Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, the water level of the Yamuna River reached 166.26 meters on Monday (September 1), which is 26 centimeters above the danger mark. This has led to flood-like conditions in urban and rural areas. Colonies in Jaisinghpura, Kalindi Vihar, and Vrindavan have been submerged, with 3-4 feet of water on the roads, and people are using boats to move around. Standing crops of paddy, millet, and vegetables in the fields have been destroyed. The administration has started providing relief materials and medical aid to the affected families.
Waterlogging in Ghats and Colonies Due to Rising Water Levels
The most significant impact of the rising water level is being observed at the ghats and colonies. Vishram Ghat, Prayag Ghat, and several ghats in Vrindavan are completely submerged. Due to water reaching the stairs, the district administration has imposed a complete ban on bathing and religious activities here.
Colonies in Jaisinghpura, Kalindi Vihar, Bhakti Vihar, Shyam Nagar, Mohini Nagar, and Vrindavan have 3-4 feet of water. Traffic on the roads has come to a complete halt, and people are leaving their homes with the help of boats or tubes.
Heavy Crop Damage in Villages
The situation is becoming even more critical in the villages. In the villages of Akosh, Kailash, and Chinparai in the Baldev and Mahavan tehsils, crops of paddy, millet, sorghum, groundnut, and vegetables have been completely submerged. Farmers are facing losses worth lakhs of rupees due to the destruction of standing crops over hundreds of bighas of land.
The b current of water on the Nauhjheel-Shergarh road has washed away the road, disrupting connectivity to the rural areas. This is affecting not only the lives of farmers but also those of common people.
Warning Not to Go Near the River Banks
The administration is fully active in tackling the flood situation. The District Magistrate visited the affected areas and distributed ration, drinking water, and medical facilities to approximately 200 families. Additionally, rescue teams are continuously working to move people to safer locations.
The administration has warned people not to go near the river banks and not to pay attention to any kind of rumors. Officials stated that the situation is being monitored and more resources will be made available if needed.
Flood Threat in Mathura Due to Continuous Rain
The flood situation in Mathura is also becoming serious due to continuous heavy rainfall in the hilly areas. As a result, lakhs of cusecs of water are being released from Tajewala, Okhla, and Hathnikund Barrages. Furthermore, 82,000 cusecs of water have also been discharged from Gokul Barrage towards Agra.
If the rainfall continues, the water level of the Yamuna may rise further in the coming days. This will directly impact lakhs of people living in Mathura and surrounding districts.
