Jaipur: A special court has delivered a landmark judgment in the 'live bomb case' related to the horrific serial bomb blasts that shook Jaipur, Rajasthan, 17 years ago. Special Judge Ramesh Kumar Joshi, in his detailed 600-page judgment, sentenced four accused to rigorous life imprisonment. This case pertains to the serial blasts that devastated Jaipur on May 13, 2008.

Who are the convicts?

1. Sarwar Azmi
2. Saifur Rahman
3. Mohammad Saif
4. Shahbaz Ahmad

The court found them guilty under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 121-A (waging war against the nation), 124-A (sedition), 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion), and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Additionally, they were convicted under Section 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), and sections 4 and 5 of the Explosives Act.

What is the ‘Live Bomb’ case?

During the Jaipur bomb blasts, a live bomb was discovered near the Chandpole Hanuman Temple, which was successfully deactivated in time. This bomb was part of a larger planned attack that was thwarted at the last minute. The four convicts have now been found guilty in connection with this incident. Surprisingly, the four convicts showed no visible distress after the sentencing. Their smiles as they left the court surprised those present.

Previous Death Sentences and Acquittal

Previously, three accused in the serial bomb blast case were sentenced to death, while Shahbaz was acquitted. However, the Rajasthan High Court acquitted all three due to insufficient evidence, prompting the government to challenge the decision in the Supreme Court. That appeal is still pending. This decision stands as a symbol of the strength of the judicial system, not only for the victims of the Jaipur bomb blasts but for the entire nation. After a 17-year-long legal process, the conviction of the accused brings relief to the victims, although the final decision in the main blast case is still awaited.
