Canada's new Prime Minister has stated his support for b commercial and friendly relations with India, vowing to pursue opportunities without reservation.

Mark Carney, Canada's Prime Minister: Mark Carney, former Governor of the Bank of Canada and a candidate for Prime Minister, recently delivered a significant statement on Canada-India relations. He asserted that if elected, he would prioritize strengthening the relationship and expanding trade opportunities with India. This statement contrasts with the stance of his predecessor, Justin Trudeau, whose recent pronouncements on India have led to a deterioration in bilateral ties.

Commitment to Restoring India-Canada Relations

In a Calgary address, Mark Carney stated, "If given the opportunity, I will work to improve and strengthen Canada's relationship with India. Commercial relations should be underpinned by amicable values, and I will not hesitate to take steps in this direction." This statement was made before he was elected leader of the governing Liberal Party of Canada.

He emphasized the need for Canada to diversify its trade relationships with like-minded countries. Carney believes that despite serious allegations surrounding the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistani separatist leader and alleged Indian agent in Canada, significant opportunities exist for enhanced relations with India.

In Contrast to Trudeau's Controversy

Mark Carney's statement comes amidst strained relations between the Indian and Canadian governments. In September 2023, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged the potential involvement of Indian agents in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India vehemently rejected these allegations, asserting that Canada had failed to provide any credible evidence. This led to heightened tensions, with both countries recalling diplomats and officials.

However, Mark Carney's statement suggests a willingness to pursue new initiatives to improve bilateral relations.

Mark Carney's Experience and Perspective

Mark Carney's statement is considered significant for both India and Canada. A former Goldman Sachs executive and Governor of the Bank of Canada, Carney possesses extensive experience in global economic affairs. He is credited with steering Canada through the 2008 global financial crisis and subsequently served as Governor of the Bank of England. Carney previously spent 13 years working in London, Tokyo, New York, and Toronto.
