Inheritance Among Sons: Priceless Stories
Ashok and his wife were enjoying their retired life with much happiness and laughter.
Their three sons, each with their families, lived in different cities.
But Ashok had a rule… during Diwali, all three sons would come to stay with him for a week with their families. They would spend quality time together, free from any worries.
However, tragedy struck when Sheila suffered a heart attack, shattering all their happiness in an instant.
Hearing the sad news, all three sons returned. After all the rituals and gatherings, they assembled in the evening.
The eldest daughter-in-law said, "Father, how will you manage alone now? Come stay with us."
"No, daughter-in-law, let me stay here. I'm accustomed to this place. The children's family life..." Ashok demurred.
The eldest son wanted to say something, but he gestured for him to remain silent.
"Children, your mother has left us forever. She has some belongings here; you can divide them amongst yourselves. I won't be able to manage her things anymore," Ashok said softly.
Perhaps sensing their thoughts, the eldest daughter-in-law said, "Father-in-law, I think you're thinking about me. Give the jewelry set to Meera. She always wanted it."
"And I have already divided everything equally among the three of you. These two items were very dear to her. Sometimes she would take them out and look at them fondly. But now, how do I divide these two items among the three of you?" Ashok pondered aloud.
Everyone looked at each other in surprise.
Then the middle son, composedly, said, "This jewelry set, she often spoke of giving it to Meera."
But the problem remained unresolved. Now Ashok was thinking… what should I give my eldest daughter-in-law?
As if reading his mind, the eldest daughter-in-law, Nandini, smiled and said, "Father-in-law, perhaps you're thinking about me. Give the jewelry set to Meera and the handmade watch to Sarita. Mother always wanted this.”
"But Nandini, what should I give you… I don't know," Ashok interjected.
"You have something even more precious than that, Father. Last time, Mother told me, 'After me, taking care of your father is your responsibility.' Just fulfill her wish and come live with us without delay.”
Hearing this, tears welled up in Ashok's eyes, and some present there lowered their gaze…!!
