Airbus has announced a software update for over 6,000 of its aircraft operating worldwide, increasing the likelihood of delays or cancellations for many flights. The company states that this measure is essential to ensure aircraft safety.
New Delhi: In recent days, several airlines had reported flight delays, but now air travelers might have to wait for several hours or even weeks. Airbus has announced an update for over 6,000 aircraft. Following this advisory from Airbus, many flights worldwide have been cancelled.
Air France has cancelled 35 flights, and Japanese airlines have cancelled 65 flights. In India, Air India and Indigo have also issued warnings and advisories to passengers regarding this matter.
Why This Update Became Necessary
The necessity for this software update in Airbus A320 aircraft emerged after an incident last October. On October 30, a JetBlue A320 aircraft was traveling from Mexico to the US when a technical glitch occurred in the aircraft's computer. This caused the aircraft's nose to dip, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing.
Investigations revealed that the cause of this incident was solar radiation, or intense rays from the sun, which affected the aircraft's data and computer systems. This technical malfunction could have posed a threat to passenger safety. Considering this, Airbus decided to update the software in all A320 aircraft.
Update Process and Timeline

Airbus states that for most aircraft, this software update process can be completed within a few hours. However, it might take up to a week to implement it on approximately 1,000 aircraft. According to experts, this process is critically important from a safety perspective. Airbus has clarified that passenger safety is paramount compared to the potential inconvenience caused to flights.
Following Airbus's decision, several airlines have made changes to their flights. Approximately 70 percent of flights operated by European companies are likely to be affected.
Air France: 35 Flights Cancelled
- Japanese Airlines: 65 Flights Cancelled
- India: Air India and Indigo also issued advisories to passengers
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has also warned that flights might be disrupted due to the software update, but prioritizing safety is essential.
Suggestions for Passengers
Airbus and related airlines have appealed to passengers to:
- Check for updates on their flight status and schedule well in advance.
- Contact airlines before long-distance travel to make alternative flight arrangements.
- Arrive at the airport ahead of time to avoid any delays or changes.
During this update, technical inspections and system tests will be completed on the aircraft, which will reduce the likelihood of any technical malfunctions in the future. Airbus has clarified that this software update is necessary to ensure passenger safety. This step has been taken to prevent the impact of solar radiation on the aircraft's computer systems.
