Amla Navami Vrat Katha: The festival of Amla Navami will be celebrated on October 31, 2025, this year. It is believed that on this day, Lord Vishnu resides in the Amla tree, and worshipping it brings prosperity and good health into one's life. The auspicious time (Shubh Muhurat) will be from 06:32 AM to 10:03 AM. According to scriptures, Goddess Lakshmi also pleased Lord Vishnu and Shiva by worshipping the Amla tree on this very day. Since then, the tradition of this fast and worship began, which is believed to remove poverty and grant salvation.
When is Amla Navami and the Auspicious Time for Worship?
This year, Amla Navami puja will be performed on October 31, 2025. The Navami tithi (date) began at 10:06 AM on October 30 and will conclude at 10:03 AM on October 31. The auspicious time for worship will be from 6:32 AM to 10:03 AM on October 31. During this period, performing proper worship of the Amla tree bestows special blessings from Lord Vishnu.
Religious Significance of Amla Navami
In Hinduism, the Amla tree is considered highly auspicious. It is specifically mentioned in scriptures such as the Skanda Purana and Padma Purana. It is believed that on the Navami of the Shukla Paksha (bright half) of the Kartik month, Lord Vishnu resides in the Amla tree. Worship performed with devotion on this day bestows blessings for good health, offspring, good fortune, and longevity.
It is also believed that consuming food under the Amla tree cures bodily ailments and brings peace of mind. On this day, women observe a fast for the happiness and prosperity of their family and the long life of their husbands.
The Legend of Amla Navami
According to a mythological legend, once Goddess Lakshmi set out to travel the Earth. She thought of worshipping both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva simultaneously. However, she couldn't figure out how this would be possible. While meditating, she realized that the Amla tree was the only place where the sacred qualities of both Tulsi and Bel (Bilva) were present.
Goddess Lakshmi went under the Amla tree and performed worship. She lit a lamp, offered water, and ritualistically meditated upon Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Pleased with her devotion, both deities appeared and blessed Goddess Lakshmi, stating that whoever worships the Amla tree with faith and devotion will never experience poverty in their life and will attain salvation.
After this, Goddess Lakshmi prepared food under the Amla tree and offered it to Lord Vishnu and Shiva. Both accepted the prasad (offering), and then Goddess Lakshmi also partook in the same meal. Since then, the tradition of celebrating Kartik Shukla Navami as Amla Navami began.
Amla Navami Puja Method
Wake up early in the morning, take a bath, and wear yellow clothes. Decorate an Amla tree in a sacred place or courtyard. Offer water, roli (vermilion), turmeric, rice, and flowers at the root of the tree. Light a lamp and perform the Aarti of Lord Vishnu. Circumambulate the Amla tree seven or eleven times. Recite Vishnu Sahasranama and sit with your family under the Amla tree to partake in a meal. This meal is known as 'Amla Bhojan' (Amla meal).
