Gopashtami: According to the Hindu calendar, the festival of Gopashtami is celebrated every year on the Ashtami Tithi (eighth day) of the bright fortnight of Kartik month. In the year 2025, this festival will be celebrated on Thursday, October 30. This day is dedicated to cow worship (Gau-Puja) and cow service (Goseva), and is associated with the story of Lord Krishna saving the residents of Braj from the wrath of Indra. This festival is celebrated with special enthusiasm in Mathura, Vrindavan, and the Braj region. Worshipping cows and making donations on this day is believed to bring good fortune and prosperity.
Religious Significance of Gopashtami Festival
Gopashtami is connected to the life-leela (divine play) of Lord Krishna. According to mythological tales, when Lord Krishna held up the Govardhan mountain on his little finger for seven days to protect the residents of Braj from the wrath of Indra, Lord Indra, on the advice of Devarshi Narada, accepted his defeat on the day of Gopashtami. From that very day, this festival came to be known as Gopashtami.
It is also said that on this very day, Lord Krishna first entered the forest to graze cows, an event known as Gocharan Leela. For this reason, the worship of cows and calves holds special significance on this day. In Braj and Mathura, this festival is celebrated with great devotion. Here, devotees adorn cows, apply turmeric and sandalwood paste on their bodies, garland them with flowers, and perform Aarti (a ritual of worship with lamps) for Gau Mata (Mother Cow).
