The Indian National Congress has appointed Vinod Jakhar as the new National President of its student wing, the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). The appointment has taken effect immediately following approval by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.
According to a statement issued by party General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal, Kharge approved Jakhar’s appointment as NSUI President with immediate effect. Jakhar has succeeded Varun Chaudhary in the position.
Prior to the appointment, the Congress leadership conducted interviews with multiple candidates for the post. Jakhar was serving as President of the Rajasthan unit of NSUI at the time of his elevation. He has been active in student politics and previously served as President of the Rajasthan University Students’ Union.

Vinod Jakhar was born on September 7, 1994, in Medh village in the Viratnagar tehsil of Jaipur district, Rajasthan. He comes from a Dalit family and is the eldest among four siblings. At the age of seven, he moved to Jaipur with his family, where he began his formal education.
Jakhar completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Rajasthan. He subsequently earned a Master’s degree in Sociology and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in the Rajasthani language.
Alongside his academic pursuits, Jakhar has been actively involved in student-related issues. As an active member of NSUI, he participated in various programmes and established his presence in student politics.
In 2014, he was elected President of Rajasthan College. In 2018, after not receiving a ticket from NSUI for the Rajasthan University Students’ Union election, he contested as an independent candidate and was elected Students’ Union President in August 2018. In February 2024, he was appointed President of the Rajasthan unit of NSUI.
With his appointment as National President, Jakhar will be responsible for overseeing NSUI’s programmes and policies across the country.
