Encounter Specialist Daya Nayak Retires After Decades of Service

Mumbai Police's renowned encounter specialist Daya Nayak eliminated several underworld gangsters by participating in more than 80 encounters. Nayak, who was recently promoted to the post of ACP, retired on July 31st.

Daya Nayak: In Mumbai's fast-paced life, where crime and criminals both adopt new tactics, there was a name that made even the biggest underworld gangsters tremble — Daya Nayak. On Thursday, July 31, 2025, this name will no longer be associated with the uniform, as Daya Nayak, renowned as an encounter specialist, retired from police service today. He was promoted to the post of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) just two days ago, but this was the last time he had the honor of wearing the uniform.

80+ Encounters, End of Terror

Daya Nayak carried out approximately 80 encounters in his career, most of which were against notorious criminals of the Mumbai underworld. He played a crucial role in dismantling the networks of Dawood Ibrahim, Chota Rajan, and many other dangerous gangsters like them. In the 90s, when crime was at its peak in Mumbai, brave officers like Daya Nayak took charge and broke the backbone of many criminal organizations.

Who is Daya Nayak?

Born in a Konkani family in the Udupi district of Karnataka, Daya Nayak joined the Mumbai Police in 1995. Hard work, honesty, and the courage to take risks soon earned him a place in special units. He was also a part of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). In 2021, when the case of the explosive-laden car found near Mukesh Ambani's house and the murder of Mansukh Hiren came to light, Daya Nayak's team also gathered important clues in the investigation.

Identity Forged Through Encounters

Daya Nayak is one of the few officers who have been given the title of 'Encounter Specialist'. In the operations carried out by him, more than arresting criminals, he ensured their end. Many gang wars in Mumbai were quelled due to his swift action. Controversies also arose many times in his name—were these encounters fake? Were they above the law? But one thing cannot be denied: his mere presence instilled fear in criminals.

Name Embroiled in Controversies Too

In 2006, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) registered a case against him for having assets disproportionate to his income. As a result, he was also suspended for nearly 6.5 years. However, he was later acquitted of the charges and returned to the police service, once again joining his mission against crime.

Impact Reflected on the Silver Screen

The extent of Daya Nayak's popularity and bravery can be gauged from the fact that several films were made inspired by his life.

  • 'Ab Tak Chhappan' (2004), in which Nana Patekar played a character like him.
  • 'Goli Maar' (Telugu)
  • Films like 'Risk', 'Encounter Daya Nayak', 'Aan: Men at Work', and 'Department' also brought his image to life on the screen.

Promotion and Farewell: Moments Filled with Pride

Just two days before his retirement on Tuesday, he was promoted to the post of ACP. This honor is a recognition of his career's dedication and commitment. He said: 'With gratitude and pride, I want to state that I have been promoted to the post of ACP. It is a matter of pride and satisfaction for me that I have served my state and country with complete dedication.' A day before his retirement, he wore the uniform and tweeted: 'This moment is of deep pride. It is not just a promotion, but a symbol of a lifetime of service, discipline, and dedication. Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra.'
