Dengue cases recorded this year in Delhi and Gurugram have been fewer compared to last year. Experts believe that improved awareness, anti-larva campaigns, and changes in weather have led to reduced mosquito breeding. However, caution is still necessary, as the risk of dengue may persist in the remaining parts of the year.
Delhi And Gurugram Dengue Cases: This year, a significant decline in dengue cases has been observed in Delhi and Gurugram compared to last year. So far, 64 cases have been reported in Gurugram and 1,136 cases in Delhi, whereas last year during the same period, there were 151 and 3,581 cases respectively. According to experts, better awareness, preventing water stagnation in homes and public places, anti-larva campaigns, and favorable weather conditions have been effective in reducing mosquito breeding. However, caution is still essential.
Why have dengue cases decreased this year?
A significant reduction in dengue cases has been observed this year in Delhi and Gurugram compared to last year. In Gurugram, 151 cases were reported until October last year, while only 64 cases have been reported this year. Similarly, Delhi has recorded 1,136 dengue cases so far this year, compared to 3,581 cases during the same period last year.
Dr. Subhash Giri, RML Hospital, states that this is a reassuring sign for now. Although the year is not yet over, a decline in cases by this time is significant.
Awareness and Prevention Have Made an Impact
Experts believe that the primary reasons for the reduction in dengue cases this year are improved awareness and proactive prevention efforts. Delhi MCD conducted extensive anti-larva campaigns. Focused drives in parks, colonies, and on rooftops of homes led to reduced mosquito breeding.
Additionally, people paid attention to keeping their homes clean and preventing water stagnation. This decreased the mosquito population and their spreading capability, which proved helpful in reducing the incidence of dengue this year.

Weather Changes Also a Factor
According to Dr. Giri, a slight change in weather was also observed this year. The heat was less compared to last year, which prevented mosquito breeding from becoming fully active. Although there was more rain, water stagnation was less.
This reduced the opportunities for mosquitoes to breed and lowered the risk of dengue infection. Experts, however, warn that cases might increase in the remaining parts of the year, so staying vigilant is crucial.
Dengue Symptoms and Precautions
Early symptoms of dengue include high fever, muscle pain, vomiting-diarrhea, and bleeding gums. Individuals with weak immunity, the elderly, and children are particularly vulnerable.
Dr. Giri stated that upon noticing any symptoms, one should immediately contact a doctor and adopt mosquito-repelling measures. Prevent water stagnation in homes and neighborhoods, and use mosquito nets or repellents for personal protection.
