Australian Indigenous Rocket 'Eris' Fails Shortly After Launch

Australia's first indigenous rocket, Eris, crashed 14 seconds after launch. The company called it a partial success. The rocket was equipped with four hybrid engines. There were no casualties.

Australia Eriss Rocket: Australia's space mission witnessed a setback as its first indigenously built orbital launch vehicle 'Eris' failed just 14 seconds after launch. The launch took place on Wednesday morning from a spaceport in the Bowen region of Queensland. The mission was carried out by a private company named Gilmour Space Technologies.

Designed to Carry Small Satellites

The Eris rocket was specifically designed to place small satellites into Low Earth Orbit. This 23-meter-long rocket is equipped with a modern 'hybrid-propelled engine'. This first test flight of the rocket was considered a historic step for Australia.

Crash Within 14 Seconds of Flight

In videos released by Australian media shortly after the rocket's launch, the rocket was seen rising from the launch tower and then hovering in the air for a few moments. Shortly after, it disappeared from sight, and a plume of smoke began to rise from the site. The company later released a statement confirming that the rocket's flight time was 14 seconds, while all four of its hybrid-propelled engines operated for 23 seconds.

Launch Called a 'Partial Success'

Gilmour Space Technologies posted on its official Facebook page, describing the mission as 'successful'. The company clarified that several technical aspects were tested in this first flight, and the engine's performance and other systems performed as expected. However, control of the rocket was lost after 14 seconds, leaving the flight incomplete.

No Casualties, Appreciation of Safety Standards

Despite the accident, a relief was that there were no reports of any casualties. All safety standards were followed at the spaceport and launch site, preventing any loss of life. The company said that this was part of the testing phase, and it is through such tests that shortcomings can be identified to make future flights safer and more successful.
