Debate over the structure of global social media platforms is intensifying amid concerns over data extraction, behaviour-based tracking, algorithmic influence, deepfakes and AI-generated risks. In this context, a platform emerging from South Asia, ZKTOR, is being discussed as a potential example of a different digital architecture.
Over the past two decades, social media has reshaped how communication, identity, social visibility, information, influence, entertainment and public presence operate online. Much of digital interaction is now organised around a limited number of platforms. While the early promise of the internet emphasised openness, communication and global connectivity, a parallel structure has developed in which platforms not only connect users but also analyse, measure and interpret their behaviour to determine what content they encounter next.
The central issue in this system is not only the collection of user data but the integration of behavioural analysis into platform business models. Metrics such as how long a user views a post, which video is replayed, what content receives reactions, what topics generate engagement, and which connections are formed have become key signals in the digital economy. In this model, the user becomes part of a continuously analysed behavioural pattern. Researchers and technology analysts increasingly refer to this structure as a surveillance-driven internet.
The economic model of many social media platforms treats user attention as a resource and behavioural signals as a commercial asset. Each click, scroll, like, comment and pause becomes a data point used to construct behavioural profiles. These profiles then determine which content is prioritised, how visibility is distributed and what material repeatedly appears in user feeds.
For years this model expanded rapidly as user numbers, advertising revenue and global reach increased. Many users accepted data sharing as an implicit exchange for free digital services, personalisation and global connectivity. However, debate is shifting beyond the quantity of data collected to questions about how that data is interpreted, how behaviour may be influenced, and how user autonomy may be affected.

Trust in digital platforms has weakened for multiple reasons. Users increasingly recognise that while they use platforms, platforms simultaneously analyse and utilise them. Algorithmic systems often prioritise emotional intensity and engagement rather than simple preference signals. This dynamic can affect information flow, public perception and online discourse.
When systems continuously determine what users see, how frequently they see it and which responses are valued, the internet becomes a constructed environment rather than a purely open platform. This shift has moved the debate beyond transparency requirements to a broader question of whether the underlying architecture of social platforms should change.

Within this broader debate, ZKTOR has drawn attention as a platform experimenting with a different architectural model. The platform is currently in a mass beta testing phase in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Available information indicates that it has reached roughly half a million downloads within the first months of rollout.

These descriptions indicate an intention to reduce behavioural profiling, limit media extraction pathways, restrict visibility of user content within the platform infrastructure and strengthen protection of digital media.
ZKTOR’s design narrative emphasises distancing itself from behaviour-based tracking systems widely used by existing platforms. The stated concept of Zero Behaviour Tracking implies that user activity patterns are not used as the central data source for algorithmic optimisation or commercial targeting.
If implemented operationally, such an approach would differ from models that rely on behavioural profiling for feed recommendations, content ranking and advertising systems. The platform narrative positions this model as an alternative to surveillance-based internet architectures.
Another central claim involves Zero Knowledge Architecture, a structure intended to limit direct readability of user-controlled content even to platform operators. In such models, platform infrastructure hosts encrypted information but may not retain full visibility of its contents.
Advocates of this design approach argue that privacy protections become ber when they are embedded within architecture rather than relying solely on user settings or platform policy decisions.
The platform’s No Media URL design is presented as a mechanism to reduce the extraction of photos, videos and other media from the platform environment. In conventional systems, media often travels through addressable delivery paths that can be accessed through scraping tools or automated download systems.
According to the platform’s technical description, ZKTOR stores media in encrypted fragments and reconstructs it only within controlled environments. This structure is intended to make external copying and redistribution more difficult.
The platform’s architecture narrative also references chunk-based storage, device-linked reconstruction and multiple encryption layers designed to limit data exposure in the event of a breach. Fragmented storage structures can prevent partial data fragments from being independently usable.
Such layered protection systems aim to reduce the value of extracted data and restrict full reconstruction of conversations or media outside controlled environments.
The discussion around media protection architecture intersects with broader concerns about digital dignity and misuse of personal content. Image manipulation, unauthorised redistribution and identity impersonation can disproportionately affect women, young users and socially vulnerable communities.
Structural limitations on copying, downloading or external manipulation of personal media are therefore increasingly discussed within digital rights debates as design-level safeguards rather than moderation-level responses.
Younger internet users increasingly view digital platforms not only as entertainment channels but also as spaces for identity expression and social belonging. Concerns about profiling, surveillance and media misuse have led to growing privacy awareness among younger users in many regions.
ZKTOR’s emergence is linked to the broader digital expansion of South Asia, a region with a large youth population, widespread smartphone adoption and significant growth in mobile internet usage. At the same time, the region presents challenges including linguistic diversity, varying levels of digital literacy and distinct local social dynamics.

Project background information states that founder Sunil Kumar Singh and his team studied linguistic diversity, cultural structures and rural digital economies across South Asia during the development phase. The platform also introduces the concept of ZHAN, described as a hyperlocal advertisement network intended to connect digital participation with local economic ecosystems.

European technology policy discussions have long emphasised data protection, regulatory compliance and user rights, which may influence design perspectives focused on privacy and institutional accountability.
According to project claims, the platform’s early development avoided venture capital investment and large government grants. This approach is presented as allowing architecture-focused development without short-term scale or monetisation pressure typically associated with investor-driven growth models.
The platform narrative also includes country-segmented server logic intended to align with jurisdiction-specific legal frameworks and data localisation requirements. This approach aims to accommodate emerging global debates on digital sovereignty, cross-border data governance and platform accountability.
Platform information indicates that ZKTOR has approached approximately half a million downloads during its early rollout in South Asia. Company-published metrics also suggest initial monthly user activity, though independent verification of adoption levels remains a separate matter.
The platform’s positioning connects several ongoing debates in the technology sector, including privacy-centric design, media safety in the AI era, behavioural tracking systems, regional digital infrastructure and digital sovereignty.
Whether ZKTOR becomes a widely adopted platform or remains a regional experiment remains uncertain.
