A camera-enabled mobile phone found inside a bathroom at a girls’ hostel in the Mohaddipur area under Gorakhpur’s Cantt police station has triggered an investigation. The students alleged that their privacy was being violated through a mobile phone secretly placed in the bathroom. After the phone was found and examined, recordings allegedly involving students staying at the hostel were reportedly discovered. Police have taken the mobile phone into custody and started an investigation, while the hostel’s female warden is being questioned. The latest police investigation has indicated that six to seven objectionable videos were found on the phone. Police are examining when the videos were recorded, how long the recording had been taking place and whether any of the videos were sent to another person or internet media platform.
The incident concerns a private girls’ hostel in Mohaddipur where students studying at different colleges and preparing for competitive examinations reside. According to reports, the hostel has around 20 rooms and approximately 26 students were staying there at the time. The incident came to light on the night of September 8, when a student who had recently moved into the hostel went to the bathroom. She noticed a mobile phone placed in a tin shed. The phone had not been placed in an ordinary manner and its camera was switched on. Suspecting something was wrong, the student first recorded the mobile phone on her own phone and then informed other students at the hostel.
According to the students, the mobile phone’s camera was facing the bathroom. When they checked the phone, recordings allegedly involving some students staying at the hostel were reportedly found. Initial reports claimed that videos of five to six students were present, while the subsequent police investigation indicated that six to seven objectionable videos had been found. Police have not yet clarified whether all the videos were recorded at this hostel, the period during which they were recorded or the identities of the students appearing in them. These aspects are being examined through technical investigation.
The discovery of the mobile phone caused fear and anger among the students. They said that the possibility of being recorded without their knowledge in a place used for private needs was deeply distressing. Police were informed about the incident. After information was received through Dial 112, a police team reached the hostel and questioned the students and the warden. The mobile phone was subsequently taken into police custody.
