India has purchased a new batch of Heron MK-II Drones from Israel under emergency provisions. This decision was made after their successful deployment in Operation Sindoor. The new deployment will further strengthen the real-time surveillance capabilities of the Army, Air Force, and Navy.

Heron MK-II Drones: India and Israel have long maintained b defense relations. Further advancing these ties, both countries have entered into an important agreement to purchase a new batch of Heron MK-II Drones. This deal was confirmed by a senior official from Israel Aerospace Industries, who stated that India made this agreement under emergency provisions.

This decision was taken considering the effective performance of this drone in the recently concluded Operation Sindoor. During the operation, the drone tracked terrorist locations, provided real-time surveillance to security forces, and delivered accurate visuals even in difficult terrains, thus proving its capability.

Decision on New Purchase

A senior official from Israel Aerospace Industries stated that India is already using Heron MK-II Drones. Both the Army and Air Force possess these drones. However, after Operation Sindoor, India felt that increasing their numbers was necessary. This is why India, without delay, agreed to purchase a new batch under emergency provisions. The official added that India has relied on Israeli technology and weapon systems for the past three decades, and this partnership continues to strengthen.

Deployment in the Navy

The biggest change with the new consignment is that Heron MK-II will now also be inducted into the Indian Navy. This will strengthen maritime security unprecedentedly. The drone will play a crucial role in monitoring increasing activities in the Indian Ocean region, distant maritime borders, and tracking the movement of suspicious vessels. Due to its real-time surveillance and long endurance capabilities, the Navy will continuously receive data, enabling timely identification of any threats.

Capabilities of Heron MK-II

The Heron MK-II is a Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drone designed for modern surveillance missions. It can fly up to an altitude of 35,000 feet and remain airborne for up to 45 hours continuously. Such a long endurance capability is found in very few drones worldwide. Its surveillance system includes Electro-Optical sensors, Infrared cameras, and Synthetic Aperture Radar, which operate in all weather conditions. Monitoring enemy posts, infiltration activities, and difficult terrains is considered extremely easy for this drone.

The Heron MK-II comes with a High-Security Communication Link, ensuring that data transmitted over long distances cannot be intercepted. This feature is particularly useful in areas where security sensitivity is very high. Armies of several countries, including the Israeli Air Force, are using it, which proves its reliability.

Experience of Operation Sindoor

After the Pahalgam terrorist attack, India launched Operation Sindoor. Heron MK-II Drones were extensively used in this campaign. These drones helped detect terrorist movements in dense forests, tracked suspicious activities in border areas, and provided clear and precise visuals to security forces. The drone's endurance and optical clarity significantly contributed to the rapid progress of the operation. Consequently, security agencies deemed it essential for future missions.

Make in India Priority

An official from Israel Aerospace Industries stated that their goal is not just to supply drones but also to promote local manufacturing under India's Make in India scheme. They also aim to work on joint production, technology transfer, and developing manufacturing capabilities in India. This will enable India to become self-reliant in the defense sector. In the coming years, India will not only use these drones but also be capable of manufacturing them.

Strengthening India's Military Capability

The new batch of Heron MK-II will strengthen India's security apparatus in several areas. It will improve border security, enhance intelligence quality in counter-terrorism operations, rapidly improve the Navy's maritime surveillance capabilities, and provide real-time surveillance to all three services. This drone is highly suitable for long-range monitoring, enabling timely identification of any major threat.
