India's ITIs to Undergo Massive Upgrade with ₹60,000 Crore Investment and Private Sector Partnerships

Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the country are set for a major transformation. The central government has launched a large-scale initiative with an investment of ₹60,000 crore to upgrade over a thousand ITI institutions nationwide. A key feature of this upgrade is the involvement of major private companies in the country.

From Reliance to Adani: Significant Interest Shown

So far, more than 12 companies have expressed interest in this government initiative. Among them, 8 major companies have already submitted their plans to the government. These companies include Reliance Group, Adani Group, Mahindra Group, JK Cement, Jindal Group, Toyota India, Schneider Electric, and Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel. These companies have provided information on the states and sectors where they intend to develop ITIs on a hub-and-spoke model.

L&T, Bajaj, and Government Companies May Also Participate

In addition to discussions with these major players, the government is in talks with other prominent companies that may also join the initiative. These include Larsen & Toubro (L&T), Bajaj Auto, Aditya Birla Group, as well as public sector undertakings like BHEL, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

What is the Hub-and-Spoke Model and How Will It Work?

The core of this initiative is the ‘hub-and-spoke’ model. Under this model, select larger and well-equipped ITI institutions will be designated as ‘hubs.’ These hubs will feature state-of-the-art machinery, training labs, and expert trainers. Smaller ITI institutions connected to these hubs will be referred to as ‘spokes,’ and will receive technology and training models from the hubs. This will ensure consistent and high-quality training across the entire network.

Training for Youth Aligned with Industry Needs

The aim of this initiative is to equip young people with the skills required by industries of today and tomorrow. Through partnerships between the government and companies, it will be ensured that training is provided to youth at the local level, directly connecting them to employment opportunities.

Company Plans: Sector Focus by State

Reliance Group will operate in states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh. Their focus will be on sectors like renewable energy, retail, advanced manufacturing, and petrochemical engineering.

Adani Group is also working on plans to develop a skilled workforce in states like Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

JK Cement will provide training in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh in sectors such as construction, renewable energy, electronics, and hospitality.

Toyota India will focus on the automobile sector, while Schneider Electric will train youth in the electrical and automation sectors.

Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel will concentrate on skill development in steel manufacturing and metalworking.

Preparations Already Underway in Several States

Some states have already begun the process of converting selected ITIs into hubs. Key states in this effort include Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. Here, companies are working with local administrations on land, resources, and training models.

Strong Ecosystem Through Industry-Academia Collaboration

The government believes that if companies provide training aligned with their respective sectors, direct employment opportunities will open up for young people. This will also bridge the gap between industry and educational institutions, creating a robust skills ecosystem.

Workforce Prepared for Future Needs

In today's world, theory alone is not sufficient. New-age industries need a workforce that is not only familiar with technology but also proficient in using it. Therefore, this initiative specifically includes areas such as automation, electronics, robotics, AI, solar, and renewable energy.

Major Transformation in the Image of ITIs

This initiative is expected to change the traditional image of ITIs. They will now be seen not just as institutions that train fitters, welders, or electricians, but as state-of-the-art and technologically empowered training hubs.
