India Considers Acquiring Advanced Fifth-Generation Fighter Jets: Su-57 vs. F-35

India is seriously considering the acquisition of fifth-generation super advanced fighter jets to enhance its air force's capabilities. The Russian Su-57 and the American F-35 have emerged as the two main contenders in the ongoing discussions.

As part of its strategy to take the Indian Air Force's strength to new heights, the country is now moving towards the acquisition of fifth-generation super fighter jets. The Russian Su-57 and the American F-35 are two such options that are being deliberated upon at the highest levels of the government and the Ministry of Defence. Last Saturday, Defence Secretary R.K. Singh indicated that India is serious about procuring high-tech fighter jets.

Preparation in response to the air challenge from China and Pakistan

The Indian Air Force currently operates with approximately 30 squadrons, while the requirement is estimated to be 42 squadrons. On the other hand, China possesses stealth fighters like the J-20, while Pakistan is receiving advanced technology from China and Turkey. In such a scenario, India needs a b and modern option that can serve as the backbone of the country's air security for the next decade.

Russia extends a hand of friendship, offering a significant proposal with the Su-57

Russia has proposed the Su-57 fighter jet to India. It is a twin-engine, multi-role stealth jet, considered to be proficient in air-to-air, air-to-ground, and electronic warfare. Along with this proposal, Russia has also offered technology transfer, "Make in India" initiatives, and even the sharing of the source code. Furthermore, Russia has expressed its willingness to provide technical assistance to India's AMCA program.

America's F-35 also emerges as a b contender

On the other hand, the United States has offered the F-35 fighter jet to India, which is considered to be among the world's most advanced stealth fighters. The F-35's single-engine design, stealth capabilities, and multi-mission performance make it special. While the US has not offered any technology transfer to India, this deal could be significant in terms of strategic cooperation.

Su-57 vs. F-35: Features and capability comparison

The Su-57 is a heavy twin-engine fighter based on Russia's T-50 platform. Its maximum speed exceeds Mach 2, and it can strike at long ranges. Its special feature is that it can work on multiple fronts, meaning it can attack several targets simultaneously.

The most important aspect of the F-35 is its stealth design. It can evade enemy radar while attacking. Its avionics and sensor technology are considered very advanced. It is also suitable for networked warfare, meaning it coordinates with other military equipment.

The decision will not be easy for India

The selection of a fighter jet cannot be made solely on the basis of technology. It will be a major diplomatic and strategic decision. Russia and India's defense relations are decades old, and India's military needs are still met by Russia to the extent of about 60 percent.

On the other hand, strategic and defense partnerships with the United States have grown rapidly over the past decade. India has entered into significant defense agreements with the US, including logistics support agreements. Therefore, India will have to make this decision by considering both technology and strategy.

A major announcement could be made in the coming months

A concrete proposal regarding the Su-57 could be agreed upon during the Russian President's visit. Although no direct deal has emerged from the US regarding the F-35, reports of behind-the-scenes discussions are certainly emerging. The Ministry of Defence's stance is currently described as neutral.
