Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal has announced that Justice Shri Chandrashekhar will be the new Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. This appointment has been made by the Central Government following a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium.

New Delhi: Justice Shri Chandrashekhar will be the next Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. The Central Government announced his appointment on Thursday, following a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal shared the details of this decision on the social media platform 'X', stating that under the powers vested by the Constitution of India and in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, the President has appointed Justice Shri Chandrashekhar, a judge of the Bombay High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

The Union Law Minister stated that as per the provisions of the Constitution of India, and after consulting the Chief Justice of India, the President has appointed Justice Shri Chandrashekhar, a judge of the Bombay High Court, as the Chief Justice. The Supreme Court Collegium meeting was held on August 25, where a three-member panel headed by the Chief Justice recommended the name of Justice Shri Chandrashekhar. Justice Chandrashekhar will become the Chief Justice of the second-largest High Court in India, which has jurisdiction over the states of Maharashtra and Goa.

  1. Experience as Acting Chief Justice: Justice Shri Chandrashekhar previously served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. He will now permanently assume the responsibilities of the Chief Justice.
  2. Early Life and Education: Justice Chandrashekhar was born on May 25, 1965. He obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, in 1993 and subsequently began practicing in Delhi. Throughout his career, he represented clients in both criminal and civil cases.
  3. Notable Experience in the Supreme Court: During his 19 years of practice, Justice Chandrashekhar argued in approximately 3,500 cases, most of which were in the Supreme Court. According to the Bombay High Court website, his name is recorded as a lawyer in around 140 Supreme Court judgments.
  4. Government and Institutional Representation: Justice Chandrashekhar also served as the standing counsel for the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the state of Jharkhand. Additionally, he represented the Bihar State Housing Board, Bihar State Pollution Control Board, Jharkhand State Electricity Board, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, and several private companies.
  5. Journey in Judicial Service: He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Jharkhand High Court in January 2013. He became a Permanent Judge in June 2014. On December 29, 2023, he took charge as the Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. In July 2025, he was appointed as a judge of the Bombay High Court. He will now assume the role of Chief Justice here.
