Complete Control from a ₹1155 Crore Deal
Earlier this year, Chennai-based media company Sun Group, owned by Kalanithi Maran and where Kavya Maran serves as a director, acquired the entire Northern Superchargers team. The deal is reportedly valued at approximately ₹1155 crore. Previously, 51% of the team's stake was held by the Yorkshire Club, and 49% by the England Cricket Board (ECB). Now, the entire team is under the control of the Maran family, giving Kavya Maran and her family full authority over all team decisions.
The new team name brings to mind the Sunrisers teams from the IPL and SA20 league. Kavya Maran desires a consistent and global brand for all her teams. Therefore, she changed Northern Superchargers' name, adding ‘Sunrisers’ and incorporating the team's home city, Leeds. The full name of the team is now Sunrisers Leeds.
The necessary documents for the new name have been submitted to Companies House in Leeds. This means that the name ‘Northern Superchargers’ has now become history.
More Changes in The Hundred
Not just Kavya Maran's team, but several other teams in The Hundred league are also planned to be renamed. According to reports:
- Manchester Originals → Manchester Super Giants
- Oval Invincibles → Mumbai Indians London
The objective of these changes is to popularize the league globally and to give international recognition to Indian franchise brands.
