The teams for the West Indies ODI series and the Irani Cup are likely to be selected on September 16. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar is expected to chair the selection meeting.
The selection challenge has increased because the West Indies ODI series overlaps with the Asian Games schedule. As a result, some key players are expected to be unavailable, requiring selectors to consider new options for different roles.
With Shreyas Iyer likely to miss the West Indies series because of his involvement in the Asian Games, KL Rahul is being considered one of the best options for the vice-captaincy.
Rahul has extensive experience in international cricket and the ODI format. He can also handle wicketkeeping duties alongside batting and has previously taken on leadership responsibilities for India.
However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not officially announced the vice-captain. Rahul's appointment therefore remains a potential option at this stage.
The wicketkeeper selection is also expected to be a key decision for the West Indies series. Apart from Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel are being considered for the second wicketkeeper's position.
Pant has been an important wicketkeeper-batter for India for a long time. His return could provide experience and an attacking batting option in the ODI team. Jurel, meanwhile, has shown his ability in limited opportunities and has also gained leadership experience.
According to reports, the selectors will have to choose between the two. The views of captain Shubman Gill and the team management could also be considered in the decision.
The wicketkeeping equation is also being influenced by the possibility of Ishan Kishan being part of India's Asian Games team. This could leave limited wicketkeeping options for the West Indies ODI series.
If Rahul is retained as the primary wicketkeeping option, either Pant or Jurel could be selected as the second wicketkeeper.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya's fitness could be another issue at the selection meeting. A final decision on his availability is expected after a fitness assessment.
Recent reports indicate that Pandya is being moved towards an opportunity at India A level to return to competitive cricket. This suggests that selectors want him to regain match fitness as soon as possible.
His selection for the West Indies series will depend on his fitness and the selectors' assessment. A decision on Pandya is therefore also expected to be part of the September 16 meeting.
The September 16 selection meeting could be chief selector Ajit Agarkar's final meeting under his current contract period. According to reports, Agarkar's scheduled tenure is set to end on October 4.
He is reportedly likely to receive a one-year extension, but the BCCI has not made any official announcement about his future. The West Indies series selection meeting could therefore also be important in this regard.
