Kolkata, August 31, 2025:
General people are panicking seeing the market prices before the Pujas. From staple vegetables to leafy greens, prices are skyrocketing across the board. Even a modest bottle gourd or pointed gourd is now beyond reach, causing distress to buyers.
Vegetable prices more than doubled compared to earlier
Bottle gourds, which usually sell for between Tk 20-30, are now priced at Tk 70-80. Prices of all other vegetables in the market are also rising rapidly. Daily food items are no longer affordable for consumers.
Rice prices not yet under control
A few months ago, the administration had stated that prices would normalize after the new rice entered the market. However, even after four to five months, prices remain out of reach. While potato and onion prices are slightly under control, onion prices are starting to rise again. Traders say that the price increase is mainly due to reduced supply of vegetables.
Crop damage due to rainfall
Vegetable prices usually increase during the monsoon season. This year, continuous rainfall has led to waterlogging in many fields, causing crop damage. The remaining crops are also partially rotting. As a result, the supply in wholesale and retail markets has decreased, leading to a price surge.
Price hike in Kolkata's major markets
The price hike for all vegetables is evident in Kolkata's major markets such as Kalighat, Garia, Baghajatin, Maniktala, Gariahat, and Shyambazar. Prices that were Tk 50-60 per kg a few weeks ago are now Tk 100-120. Brinjal and green chilies have crossed Tk 150. Pointed gourds, okra, and ridge gourds are all selling for Tk 80-100.
Suffering of the common people
Sukumr Sarkar, a resident of Gariahat, said, "It has become very difficult to buy the vegetables we regularly purchase. Buying chilies or brinjals empties our pockets. Tomato prices are also climbing. Everything will be out of reach before the Pujas." Sellers say they have to procure items at higher prices from the wholesale market, making it difficult to survive, let alone make a profit.
Some relief through government initiatives
The state government is selling vegetables at fair prices through 'Sufal Bangla' outlets. However, the supply there is limited, and the prices are not entirely affordable. Pointed gourds, okra, and ridge gourds are priced at Tk 65 per kg. Efforts are being made to control the market by bringing in vegetables from other states, but the situation has not changed much.
Prices increase in hotels and restaurants
The increased vegetable prices have impacted hotels and restaurants during the Puja season. Many places are managing the situation by using soy chunks or alternatives. Customers are saying, "Prices have risen so much that managing daily expenses has become a cause for worry."
