NATO Chief: Trump's 50% Russian Oil Tariff Forces India to Clarify Strategy with Putin

According to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, after Trump's 50% Russian oil tariff, India had to clarify its strategy to Putin over the phone. India wants to support Russia, but maintaining balance under US pressure is challenging.

Trump Tariff: NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has made a sensational claim that the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on India for buying Russian oil are profoundly affecting Moscow. Rutte stated that due to these tariffs, India is now demanding to clarify its strategy to Russian President Vladimir Putin over the phone.

Strategic Talks Between PM Modi and Putin

According to Rutte, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked Russia about its strategy on Ukraine, as India faces a 50% tariff imposed by the US. Rutte explained that India wants to make it clear to Putin that it supports Russia, but must maintain balance in light of US sanctions.

Tariff Details

Last month, the Trump administration imposed a 25% reciprocal tariff and an additional 25% tariff on India for purchasing Russian oil. This resulted in a total impact of a 50% tariff. Trump alleged that India's policy supports Moscow and encourages attacks on Ukraine. Since returning to power in January, Trump has imposed similar reciprocal tariffs on several countries.

Rutte's Statement and NATO's Stance

Speaking to CNN during the UNGA session in New York, Rutte stated that these tariffs are immediately impacting Russia. He urged NATO countries to stop buying Russian oil. Rutte supported Trump's position and explained that NATO's commitment to ending the Ukraine war is not yet 100%. The purchase of Russian oil is affecting this process.

America's Message

On September 13, Trump stated on his social media platform Truth Social that he is prepared to impose "major sanctions" on Russia until all NATO countries cease purchasing Russian oil. His stance is seen as a symbol of pressure on Russia and the countries supporting it.

India's Strategic Challenge

According to Rutte's claim, India is now in a sensitive position. On one hand, it wants to support buying oil from Russia, while on the other hand, the 50% tariff imposed by the US is increasing trade and economic pressure. The objective of PM Modi's conversation with Putin is to maintain this balance and safeguard India's interests.
