Veteran film producer and former Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) Chairman Pahlaj Nihalani has died at the age of 76. He was reportedly suffering from a liver-related illness for some time.
Nihalani was among the prominent producers in Hindi cinema who delivered several commercially successful films during the 1980s and 1990s. Over the course of his career, he produced numerous films that achieved box-office success and helped introduce new talent to the industry.
Films produced under his banner were known for presenting mass entertainment to audiences of that era. His productions often combined melodrama, music and family-oriented entertainment, a formula that gained widespread popularity among viewers.
Pahlaj Nihalani is also remembered for providing an early platform to several major actors, including Akshay Kumar, Govinda and Sunny Deol. Several of Govinda’s early films played a role in establishing him as a leading star of the 1990s, while Nihalani is also counted among the producers who helped provide Akshay Kumar with early recognition.
His films introduced audiences to a blend of action and comedy that became popular during that period.
Between 2015 and 2017, Nihalani served as Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification. During his tenure, he remained in the spotlight over several decisions and controversies.
Debates continued within the film industry regarding film certification policy, censorship guidelines and cuts in films. While several filmmakers and creative professionals questioned some of his decisions, others viewed his strict approach as necessary.
During his long career, Nihalani produced several well-known films. His major productions include Aankhen, Andaz, Ilzaam, Aag Ka Gola, Aandhi-Toofan, Talash, Hathkadi, Gunahon Ka Faisla, Paap Ki Duniya, Mitti Aur Sona and Dil Tera Diwana.
He also remained in the news for later productions such as Rangeela Raja and Julie 2. His films generally leaned towards commercial cinema, with entertainment as a primary focus.
