PM Modi's Trinidad and Tobago Visit: Strengthening Ties with the Global South

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a five-nation tour aimed at strengthening India's relationships with the Global South. As part of this journey, he arrived in Trinidad and Tobago, where he received a grand welcome.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's diplomatic visit to five nations has left a mark of India and Indian culture in Trinidad and Tobago. Arriving to deepen relations with the Global South, Prime Minister Modi was welcomed in Trinidad and Tobago in a traditional and grand manner. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar of the country organized a special dinner in honor of PM Modi, which infused new energy into the historical relations between the two countries.

A special aspect of the dinner was that Prime Minister Modi was served food on sohari leaves. Eating food on sohari leaves is an important cultural tradition among people of Indian origin in Trinidad and Tobago, which has become an identity there for hundreds of years. This tradition is particularly followed during festivals, religious events, and to welcome special guests. PM Modi also accepted this honor in a very emotional manner and described it as a symbol of shared cultural heritage.

A Precious Gift Reminiscent of Ayodhya and Prayagraj

On this occasion, Prime Minister Modi also presented a very special gift to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar of Trinidad and Tobago. He presented a replica of the grand Ram temple being built in Ayodhya, the holy water of the Saryu River, and the water from the Mahakumbh of Prayagraj. PM Modi said that this gift is not only a symbol of India's cultural faith but also a means of strengthening the historical and spiritual relations between the two countries.

In the photos shared on social media, PM Modi wrote, "This gift is a symbol of our emotional closeness with the people of Indian origin in Trinidad and Tobago." He said that the cultural relations between India and Trinidad and Tobago are centuries old, and it is the responsibility of all of us to preserve them for future generations.

Dialogue with Overseas Indians

In Trinidad and Tobago, PM Modi also addressed the people of Indian origin living there, whose population's roots are connected to indentured laborers of the 19th century. He said that the Government of India has taken steps to strengthen the connection of overseas Indians with their country through the OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) card. 

This will also help in connecting the sixth generation of Indian origin settled in Trinidad with India. The Prime Minister said, "All of you are true envoys of India's heritage. Indian traditions are alive here because of your efforts, and this makes us proud."

The Voice of the Global South Will Gain Strength

Through this visit to Trinidad and Tobago, Prime Minister Modi also made it clear that India will become the voice of the interests of the countries of the Global South. India is now ready to bly raise the needs and aspirations of small and developing countries on international platforms. Meaningful discussions also took place between the two Prime Ministers on issues related to mutual cooperation, trade, education, and culture. The leaders of Trinidad and Tobago expressed their desire to increase partnerships in Indian technology, health, and education.

PM Modi's visit has further strengthened India's global image. The presentation of the Ayodhya memento and Saryu-Mahakumbh water to the Prime Minister there is a message that India never forgets its cultural roots and values, no matter what platform it reaches.
