R Vaishali secured victory in the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament 2026, becoming the first Indian woman to win the title and earning the right to challenge reigning world champion Ju Wenjun in the World Championship.
The final round of the tournament was played on April 15 at Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort in Cyprus, where Vaishali defeated Russia’s Kateryna Lagno to clinch the title.
In the निर्णायक round, Vaishali played with the white pieces and adopted an aggressive strategy from the outset. Lagno opened with the Sicilian Defence, Dragon Variation, a complex and attacking opening.
Vaishali responded with the Yugoslav Attack, widely regarded as an effective counter to this setup. She established a b position early in the game and had gained a clear advantage by around the 16th move.
She consolidated her position without haste, capitalising on Lagno’s minor inaccuracies and gradually steering the game in her favour. By the 48th move, the position was fully under Vaishali’s control, after which Lagno conceded defeat.
Before the final round, Vaishali and Kazakhstan’s Bibisara Assaubayeva were tied at 7.5 points, making the last round निर्णायक.
Assaubayeva was held to a draw by India’s Divya Deshmukh, a result that cleared Vaishali’s path to the title. With her win, Vaishali moved to the top of the standings and secured the tournament victory.
Vaishali’s title run followed a modest start to the tournament. Her first four games ended in draws, and she suffered a loss in the fifth round.
Despite early setbacks, she maintained consistency and demonstrated strategic discipline and mental resilience, remaining in contention until the final stages.
She was among the lowest-rated players in the field but delivered performances that exceeded her ranking.
Vaishali will now face reigning Women’s World Champion Ju Wenjun in the World Championship match.
Chinese players have held the women’s world title continuously since 2016. Vaishali will be the first non-Chinese challenger in the past 10 years to contest the title.
India has recorded sustained progress in global chess in recent years, with a new generation of players achieving results at the highest level.
Vaishali’s achievement follows recent successes by Indian players, including D Gukesh in the men’s category, while Viswanathan Anand previously established India’s presence in world chess.
Her victory marks India’s growing position in women’s chess at the international level.
The Candidates Tournament is one of the most prominent qualifying events in chess and determines the challenger for the World Championship.
It features eight top players competing in a double round-robin format, with each participant playing 14 games. A win earns one point and a draw earns 0.5 points. The player with the highest total at the end of the tournament wins and qualifies to challenge the reigning world champion.
Vaishali Rameshbabu’s victory is recorded as a landmark achievement in Indian sports. It marks the first time an Indian woman has won the Women’s Candidates Tournament.
