Shreya Ghoshal, one of the most prominent voices in the Indian music industry, has built a long-standing career in playback singing across multiple languages. Known for her melodic and emotive singing style, she has recorded thousands of songs and established a presence not only in Hindi cinema but also in several regional music industries.
Ghoshal is celebrating her birthday on March 12. She was born on March 12, 1984, in Murshidabad, West Bengal, although she spent much of her childhood in Rajasthan. From an early age, she showed a b interest in music and began demonstrating her singing ability during childhood.
Ghoshal’s first music teacher was her mother, who introduced her to the basics of singing during her early years. According to reports, she began practising music with her mother at the age of four. By the age of six, she performed on stage for the first time and drew attention for her voice and stage confidence.
While she performed at several small events during her childhood, she gained national recognition through a television singing reality show. Ghoshal participated in the television music competition “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa,” where her performances received b responses from both the judges and the audience. The programme played a significant role in her early career and helped bring her to the attention of film industry professionals.

A major turning point in Ghoshal’s career came when she was offered the opportunity to sing in filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film “Devdas.” The opportunity reportedly arose after Bhansali’s mother regularly watched “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa” and heard Ghoshal perform on the show.
Impressed by her voice, she suggested to Bhansali that the singer be given an opportunity in the film. Bhansali subsequently invited Ghoshal to record songs for “Devdas,” when she was 16 years old.
Ghoshal recorded five songs for “Devdas,” and the tracks gained wide popularity. The film’s music contributed to her national recognition, and she received the National Film Award for her work on the project. Winning the award at such a young age marked a notable milestone early in her career.
Over the course of her career, Ghoshal has recorded more than 3,000 songs. In addition to Hindi, she has sung in several Indian languages including Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Marathi.
With a career spanning more than two decades, Ghoshal continues to remain active in the music industry. Her professional journey, which began with a television reality show, has expanded to performances and recordings across national and international platforms.
