Supreme Court Refuses Immediate Hearing on Delhi Stray Dog Petition

The Supreme Court has refused an immediate hearing on the petition regarding stray dogs in Delhi. The issuance of a notification by the MCD was considered a violation of judicial process. The matter will now proceed according to the established procedure.

Delhi: The Supreme Court has refused an immediate hearing on a new petition filed regarding the issue of stray dogs in Delhi. The petition was filed against the decision of the MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi) to pick up dogs and send them to shelter homes. The petitioner argued that the MCD's notification violates judicial procedure.

Key Argument of the Petitioner

The petitioner argued in court that a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court is still deciding whether to uphold a previously issued order or not. This order pertained to sending stray dogs in Delhi-NCR to shelter homes. The petitioner stated that the MCD issued the notification without waiting for the court's final order, which is against judicial procedure.

MCD Notification and Controversy

The MCD recently issued a notification stating that stray dogs found on the city's streets would be picked up and kept in shelter homes. The petitioner argued that this step is a disregard for the Supreme Court's order. They also stated that picking up dogs without an order is a violation of animal rights.

Previous Supreme Court Hearing

In the previous hearing on August 11, a bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and Justice R. Mahadevan ordered that all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR be sent to shelter homes and not released back onto the streets. The MCD issued the notification after this order.

Court's Stance

The Supreme Court has currently rejected the petitioner's demand, stating that the hearing of the matter will proceed according to the established procedure. The court said that the demand for an urgent hearing cannot be accepted because the three-judge bench has not yet made a decision on this issue.

Reaction of Animal Lovers

Animal lovers and several NGOs have expressed concern against the MCD's notification. They say that the safety and health of the dogs should be taken care of while picking them up and sending them to shelter homes. Some said that this step could endanger the humane approach towards stray dogs.
