Supreme Court to Hear Bihar Electoral Roll Dispute on Monday

The Supreme Court will hear the case related to SIR, or Special Inclusion/Removal Requests, concerning the draft electoral roll in Bihar on Monday. This matter was raised on Friday by senior advocate Prashant Bhushan. He had requested an extension of the deadline for submitting claims and objections.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has announced that it will hear petitions related to the electoral roll (SIR) in Bihar on Monday. On Friday, senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing the petitioner, brought this matter to the court's attention. He had requested an extension of the deadline for submitting claims and objections. The Supreme Court stated that the hearing for this case would take place on Monday.

Supreme Court Lists Hearing for Monday

A bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi in the Supreme Court agreed to hear the matter on Monday, responding to Prashant Bhushan's request. Bhushan informed the court that the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and some other political parties have filed an application to extend the last date for submitting claims and objections related to the draft electoral roll to September 1.

When the court inquired why the petitioners had not approached the Election Commission with this request, Prashant Bhushan stated that the application had already been sent to the Election Commission.

Previous Hearing and Election Commission's Instructions

The previous hearing was held on August 22, during which the Supreme Court had instructed the Election Commission to allow voters whose names were removed from the draft list to apply online with their Aadhaar cards. At that time, the court received an oral assurance that the request for extending the deadline could be considered later. Consequently, the matter was adjourned until September 8. Now, the Supreme Court has fixed Monday for hearing this petition.

The Supreme Court has directed that the names of approximately 65 lakh people removed from the draft list be published on the Election Commission's website and at booth-level offices. Additionally, individuals whose names have been removed can apply through both online and offline methods. The necessary documents for application include 11 documents prescribed by the Election Commission, along with which an Aadhaar card can also be used in the application.
