Under Operation Kalnemi, launched by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in the state, Dehradun Police has taken significant action, arresting 32 imposters.
Uttarakhand: Dehradun Police has conducted its largest operation to date under 'Operation Kalnemi' against fake gurus and imposters who were defrauding people in the name of religious faith in the state. Within three days, the police arrested 82 fake gurus, making it clear that there is no place for those who defraud in the name of religion in Uttarakhand.
This operation, being conducted on the instructions of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in the Devbhoomi (Land of the Gods), saw the police apprehend 34 deceitful gurus on Sunday, 23 of whom were residents of other states. Cases have been registered against all of them under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, and action is being taken.
Operation Against Those Defrauding in the Name of Religion
Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Singh said that this operation is against those who, by adopting the guise of sadhus and saints, mislead the common people, especially women and youth, and defraud them by promising solutions to personal problems. The police, after identifying such individuals, have initiated strict action against them.
The objective of 'Operation Kalnemi' is to eliminate fraud and superstition being carried out in the name of religion and faith. Station in-charges have been given strict instructions to keep an eye on the fake gurus active in their respective areas and to immediately stop their activities.

Dehradun Police has arrested 82 imposters from different police station areas in three days. The network of all these individuals is spread across several states in the country. The arrested accused include residents of states like Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Rajasthan, Orissa, and Jharkhand. The sole motive of these fake gurus was to deceive people and exploit them in the name of faith.
Several of them were engaged in fraud by changing their appearances. Sometimes in the name of astrology, sometimes in the name of exorcism, and sometimes under the pretext of conducting rituals, these people were trapping innocent people.

How did these fake gurus mislead people?
The methods of these fake gurus were almost the same. They used to roam from village to village, city to city, and mislead people by wearing religious attire. They targeted women and youth and extorted large sums of money in the name of solving their personal problems, resolving family disputes, protecting them from black magic, and providing remedies for wealth acquisition.
Some of the accused portrayed themselves as tantrics, astrologers, and fortune tellers and defrauded unsuspecting people. Many fake gurus also collected large sums of money from women by making false promises of seduction and childbirth.
