The Mythological Significance of Vat Savitri Vrat

The Vat Savitri Vrat is associated with the Mahabharata story of Satyavan and Savitri. The Vrat involves the worship of the Vat (Banyan) tree, considered symbolic of the Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh). Savitri, through her devotion and resolve, retrieved her husband Satyavan's life from Yama, the god of death. Since then, this Vrat has become an ideal for women, who observe it devoutly to ensure their husband's long life and a happy marital life.

Vat Savitri Vrat Katha

Long ago, Raja Ashwapati and Rani Malavati of Madra Desha had no children. They prayed to Goddess Savitri for offspring. Goddess Savitri blessed them with a bright and intelligent daughter. In time, the queen gave birth to a beautiful girl named Savitri.

Savitri grew up to be virtuous, graceful, and devout. When she reached marriageable age, she set out to choose her own husband. She chose Satyavan, the blind and exiled son of King Dyumatsen, who lived in the forest. Although Narada Muni warned Savitri that Satyavan had a short lifespan and was destined to die within a year, Savitri remained firm in her decision.

After their marriage, Savitri lived with her husband in the forest. On the day Satyavan was destined to die, a year after their wedding, Savitri observed a strict fast, worshipped the Banyan tree, and fasted. That day, Satyavan went to the forest to cut wood, and Savitri accompanied him. There, he suddenly felt dizzy and fainted. Yama, the god of death, appeared and came to take Satyavan's soul.

Yama repeatedly asked Savitri to return, but she refused. Impressed by her determination, devotion, and pativrata dharma (wifely fidelity), Yama granted her a boon. Savitri asked for three boons:

  1. That her father-in-law regain his lost kingdom and eyesight.
  2. That her parents be blessed with children.
  3. That she and Satyavan have a hundred children.

Yama understood the implication of the third boon—if Satyavan remained dead, how could they have a hundred children? Yama then restored Satyavan to life.
