Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has once again taken a stern stance regarding the state's electricity system. During a high-level review meeting of the Energy Department held on Wednesday, CM Yogi bly reprimanded officials regarding tripping, overbilling, and unnecessary power cuts. He stated unequivocally that these problems would no longer be tolerated.
The Chief Minister clearly stated that the electricity system is no longer just a technical or administrative issue, but has become a matter of the government's sensitivity and the public's trust. He gave officials a final warning to improve, saying that accountability would be fixed and strict action would be taken for negligence.
Negligence Unacceptable Despite Record Electricity Supply
In the meeting, officials informed that in June 2025, Uttar Pradesh successfully met its highest ever electricity demand of 31,486 MW. During this period, 16,930 million units of electricity were supplied across the state.
Despite the intense heat and humidity, an average of 24 hours of electricity was provided in urban areas, 21.5 hours at the Tehsil level, and approximately 18 hours in rural areas. The Chief Minister described this as a major achievement of the Energy Department, but also cautioned that the real problems hidden behind these figures need to be addressed seriously.
Instructions for Technical Inspection of Feeders and Transformer Upgradation
Expressing displeasure over the increasing complaints of tripping, the Chief Minister directed that a technical inspection of every feeder be conducted. Wherever weak links are found in the system, they should be repaired immediately.
He said that the capacity of transformers should be increased immediately as per the requirement, so that consumers do not face problems due to overloading. CM Yogi also directed to ensure time-bound resolution of complaints received from the field.
Every Consumer Should Receive Accurate and Timely Electricity Bills
Regarding the billing system, the Chief Minister told the officials that every consumer should receive accurate, transparent, and timely electricity bills every month. He reiterated that false billing or overbilling not only breaks the trust of consumers but also affects the credibility of the department.
He spoke of increasing billing efficiency and quick resolution of complaints. In the meeting, it was informed that 3.1 million consumers have been connected to smart meters so far, and this process is being rapidly expanded to the block level.
Preparation to Increase Electricity Generation Capacity
Reviewing electricity production, officials informed the Chief Minister that the state's current power generation capacity is 11,595 MW. This includes thermal, hydro, renewable and central government projects.
After the completion of major projects like Ghatampur and Meja, this capacity will increase to more than 16,000 MW in the next two years. The Chief Minister directed continuous monitoring and timely completion of these projects. He said that continuous increase in production capacity is necessary keeping in view the future energy needs of the state.
Emphasis on Connecting Farmers with Solar Energy
Talking about the needs of the agricultural sector, CM Yogi directed to expedite the separation of agricultural feeders and connect farmers with the Pradhan Mantri Kusum Yojana. He said that connecting all tube wells with solar energy is included in the government's priorities.
This will provide permanent relief to the farmers and reduce dependence on traditional electricity. The Chief Minister said that the direct benefits of the improvements made in the energy sector should reach the farmers of the state.
CM Yogi's Clear Message
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath clearly stated that the government has provided a record budget for reforms in the energy sector. There is no shortage of resources to strengthen electricity generation, transmission, and distribution.
In such a situation, negligence at any level will no longer be tolerated. He directed all Managing Directors of DISCOMs to take information about the situation in their areas and fix accountability at every level.
