India vs England: Shubman Gill's Century Propels India to Strong Position in Second Test

The second match of the five-Test series between India and England is being played at Edgbaston. England won the toss on the first day of this Test and invited India to bat first.

Sports News: On the first day of the second India-England Test series match being played at Edgbaston, Indian batsmen showed outstanding resilience. By stumps on Wednesday, India had scored 310 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. Captain Shubman Gill returned unbeaten with 114 runs, while Ravindra Jadeja was supporting him with 41 runs. A not-out partnership of 99 runs has been formed between the two, which has put Team India in a b position.

In this match, England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and invited India to bat first. However, the start was not good for India. Opener KL Rahul returned to the pavilion after scoring just 2 runs. He was dismissed by Chris Woakes with his accurate bowling. After this, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Karun Nair steadied the innings and formed an important partnership of 80 runs for the second wicket.

Karun Nair scored 31 runs off 50 balls and hit five brilliant boundaries, but Brydon Carse had him caught in the slips and sent him back to the pavilion. After this, Yashasvi Jaiswal once again took charge and, along with Gill, carried the innings forward. Both added 66 runs for the third wicket.

Jaiswal Misses Century

Yashasvi Jaiswal was looking in great form and was rapidly moving towards a century, but could not withstand Ben Stokes' strategy. Jaiswal played an attractive innings of 87 runs and provided a solid platform for his team, but was out 13 runs short of a century. Jaiswal faced 135 balls and hit 11 fours and 1 six.

After his dismissal, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant came to the crease. A partnership of 47 runs between Pant and Gill further boosted the score. However, Pant could not play a long innings and returned to the pavilion after scoring 25 runs off a ball from Shoaib Bashir. Young batsman Nitish Kumar Reddy, included in the team, got a chance to play his first Test in England, but he was bowled for just 1 run. Chris Woakes' incoming delivery deceived him.

Gill's Record-Breaking Century

Captain Shubman Gill once again proved his brilliant form. He scored a century in the third consecutive Test match against England, becoming the fifth Indian batsman to achieve this feat. Earlier, Mohammad Azharuddin, Rahul Dravid, Vijay Manjrekar and Cheteshwar Pujara had done this. Gill hit 12 fours and 2 sixes in his innings of 199 balls.

Gill also achieved a historic feat as captain. He became the third Indian captain to score two consecutive centuries against England. Earlier, Vijay Hazare and Mohammad Azharuddin had recorded such an achievement.

Jadeja's Steady Innings

At the other end, Ravindra Jadeja batted with composure and supported Gill by scoring 41 runs. Jadeja has so far played 78 balls, which includes 4 fours. This innings of Jadeja is considered important for Team India because he has formed a partnership of 99 runs with Gill for the sixth wicket so far.

From England, Chris Woakes took 2 wickets, while Ben Stokes, Brydon Carse and Shoaib Bashir got 1-1 wicket. Although the host team bowled well, they failed to break the partnership of Gill and Jadeja.
